Thailand braces for large anti-government rally

BANGKOK (AP) ? Thailand will deploy thousands of police officers and has invoked a special security law for an anti-government rally Saturday that is expected to be the largest since Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra took office in 2011, and that officials fear could turn violent.

Authorities expect tens of thousands of protesters, a turnout that would serve as a sharp reminder of the deep political tensions in the country despite two years of relative calm.

The demonstration is being organized by a royalist group calling itself "Pitak Siam" ? or "Protect Thailand" ? at Bangkok's Royal Plaza, a public space near Parliament that has been used by protesters in the past.

Led by retired army Gen. Boonlert Kaewprasit, the group accuses Yingluck's government of corruption, ignoring insults to the revered monarchy and being a puppet of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who is Yingluck's brother and was ousted by a 2006 coup that sent the country into spasms of political upheaval.

While the group is a newcomer to Thailand's protest scene, it is linked to the infamous "Yellow Shirt" protesters, whose rallies led to Thaksin's overthrow. They later toppled a Thaksin ally after invading and shutting Bangkok's two airports for a week in 2008.

Yingluck is taking Saturday's rally seriously. Her Cabinet invoked the Internal Security Act on Thursday in three Bangkok districts around the protest site, and she later addressed the nation to explain the move, citing concerns of violence.

"If a large number of people are mobilized by incitement ... and there is evidence that violence may be used to achieve those ends, then this is a case of national security," Yingluck said in her nationally televised address.

The security act allows authorities to close roads, impose curfews and ban use of electronic devices in designated areas. Measures began taking effect Thursday night, with police closing roads around Yingluck's office, the Government House, and placing extra security at the homes of senior officials, including the prime minister.

National police chief spokesman Maj. Gen. Piya Uthayo said Friday that nearly 17,000 police officers had been called in from around the country to provide security for the rally.

Thailand has been gripped by bouts of political instability since 2006, with Thaksin's supporters and opponents taking turns to spar over who has the right to rule the country.

The most violent episode came in 2010, when Thaksin's "Red Shirt" supporters led a two-month occupation of central Bangkok to demand the resignation of an anti-Thaksin government. The protests sparked a military crackdown that left at least 91 people dead and more than 1,700 injured.

Thaksin has lived in self-imposed exile since 2008 when he jumped bail to evade a corruption conviction and two-year jail term. He retains huge popularity among the rural poor, who want to see him pardoned and returned to power. But he is reviled by the urban elite and educated middle class, who see him as authoritarian and a threat to the monarchy.

Buoyed by Thaksin's political machine, Yingluck was elected by a landslide victory in August 2011. She initially was criticized for her lack of political experience ? she was an executive in Shinawatra family businesses ? but has won praise for leading the country through one of its longest peaceful periods in recent years.

Hot Tips For Succeeding In The Tough Home Based Business World ...

Getting your own home-based business up and running is much easier when you have good guidance. The following tips will provide you with advice and ideas for launching your own business from home.

Try to keep a record of all out outcome and income. This can save you when you get audited. Also, while filing taxes, this can help resolve any kinds of issues with tax deductions.

It is a good idea to consult with a lawyer specializing in business prior to starting your online business. Different states have their own unique laws concerning starting and running home businesses. If you take the time to speak with a business attorney, you can learn more about the laws in your state. This can help you to avoid legal troubles in the future.

As a sole owner of a business, you should also retain control of the financial decisions as well. It might seem alright to let your significant other use your business credit card, but you may not be able to write off any purchases they make that are not business related.

Home businesses don?t need flashy websites. It?s more important that the site works correctly. Services that will make your website or blog mobile-device friendly are an important option to consider to get your business information out to mobile device users. If your site displays equally well across platforms, then all of your potential customers will be able to find the information they need when researching your company.

Look for price ranges for a product in today?s market before you start trying to sell. Set your prices based off competitor evaluations so you can be competitive in your offering. Negative speech about your competitors will not generate business. If your product or service is sound, proclaim its benefits.

Solicit feedback about your products, website, and business. Ask friends and family for their thoughts, pay a few people on sites like fiverr.com to review your site for a nominal fee or just do a simple search online for comments. The feedback you receive may be both positive and negative resulting in constructive ideas for improving your business.

Your business objective is a short description about your business, usually two to three sentences. Ideally, your statement should tell a bit about your business goals, why you started the business and any other mission related information. Be sure to explain what makes your company unique and its goals in these sentences.

Save all receipts when you run a home business enterprise. One of the benefits of running your own home business enterprise is being able to deduct many of your expenses on your taxes. Therefore, it is important that you save all of your receipts. Without all your business receipts, you might be paying Uncle Sam more than you actually owe.

Keep all of the contracts you make with your clients together, so that they are easily accessible in case of a dispute. Keep a separate folder in your files where you can place other contracts until you need them, such as with your phone company or internet service, so they?re handy if you need to review them.

Be sure to gives customers notice of any item that is sold out. Customers find it especially frustrating when orders they?ve placed will not be fulfilled for several days, let alone weeks. Give your clients the option to chose other products and let them know when a product is on back-order.

Be aware of the prices the competition sets and keep a lookout for any price changes. In this way, you can maintain a competitive edge, as well as keeping a close eye on your own sales figures.

Try to avoid taking out large loans when starting a home business enterprise. Borrowing money from a friend or family member can potentially damage your relationship. Losing your house could be a possibility if you use it as collateral.

If your business has an address outside of your actual home, then use it, rather than a PO box for your business address. Your customers will be more comfortable with your site if they know you have a physical address. It will boost their trust in you and help them feel confident that you will reply to them.

You need to be determined and a self-starter, in order to be successful with a home business. Building a separate structure for your home business might be a good idea ? or even a legally required one, depending on your local codes. This is particularly well-suited for home businesses with a lot of face-to-face sales, as it keeps customers out of your private home. This can also help separate your professional life from your personal life!

Keep your mind focused on what is yet to come. It is important to celebrate the successes that you achieved in the past, but it is even more vital not to lose focus on the present. Tomorrow, next week, and further in the future is what needs your focus. These things will prepare you for newer opportunities and future obstacles. Through this process, you will never be surprised.

As these tips demonstrated, lots of people dream of opening up a work from home business for themselves. The main barriers to making those dreams reality are insufficient education and knowledge.

What's the Best Way to Keep My Notes in Sync Across All My Computers and Mobile Devices?

What's the Best Way to Keep My Notes in Sync Across All My Computers and Mobile Devices?Dear Lifehacker,
There are tons and tons of apps for syncing notes and I'm not sure what to choose. Some are simple, some are feature rich. Some sync well across all platforms, some don't. How do I figure out what's best for my needs, and what works best overall?

Sincerely,
Writer's (App) Block

Dear WAB,
Every platform has various options for syncing notes (we've picked our favorites for each before), but our needs may not mirror yours. Basically, there is no best way for everybody. We like syncing plain text with simple apps that do their one task well. Others, however, favor powerful features, organization options, and versatility. Let's talk about our favorite option first, how the software works, and then take a look at some alternatives if you'd like to go another route.

Our Favorite: Syncing with Dropbox

What's the Best Way to Keep My Notes in Sync Across All My Computers and Mobile Devices? It's no surprise that we love Dropbox, but until recently it wasn't our first choice for syncing notes. Because of problems with our former favorite Simplenote (described in the next section), some great apps, and open access to individual files, our minds have changed.

Dropbox comes with 2GB of space for free, and you can get plenty more. That's plenty for note syncing. You can sync any kind of document, too, as Dropbox is just a source for saving files. Plain text works best, but you can also use rich text files if you need more styling options. Additionally, because all the files just sit in a folder you can edit them with pretty much any text editor on your computer. That means you can use a full-fledged word processor when you want, and a basic notes app the rest of the time. Both of our favorite syncing notes apps for Windows and OS X work just fine with Dropbox, even though they were designed primarily for Simplenote. Both iOS and Android have great options that work specifically with Dropbox. See the list below for some great options for every platform.

Apps for Dropbox Notes

Runner Up: Simplenote

What's the Best Way to Keep My Notes in Sync Across All My Computers and Mobile Devices?Simplenote offers apps on every platform, supports simple styles, and syncs. On paper, it's nearly a perfect compromise between simplicity and features. But...

We loved Simplenote when it first began. It offers a great feature set, allowing simple text styles (e.g. bold and italic) plus the ability to roll back notes. It syncs everything, and it isn't hard to find an app that works with it. Unfortunately, Simplenote's syncing was never perfect and went downhill from there. On top of many sync troubles, not all Simplenote apps were created equal. Some do not respect the text styles and only sync plain text. It's still a great option, but it doesn't work quite as well as we'd like. If you want to give it a shot, check out the apps below.

Apps for Simplenote

For More Features: Evernote or Google Drive

What's the Best Way to Keep My Notes in Sync Across All My Computers and Mobile Devices?Evernote is the king of feature-rich digital notebooks, offering great software for every platform. You can create some pretty complex documents and organize them easily. If Evernote is too feature-rich for your needs and you want something simpler, several third-party developers created alternatives that focus just on taking notes and not much else. The downside of Evernote, like pretty much everything else (other than Dropbox), is that your notes are stored on Evernote's servers and you don't get a collection of text files in a folder. You may not care about this, and there really isn't a more versatile note syncing option available. Evernote is so widely supported that you can just get the apps the suit your needs best.

Apps for Evernote

Few people see Google Drive as a note-taking app, but it actually works as a really great alternative. If you want to work with more complex documents, such as Microsoft Word files or rich text, Google Drive can handle them without a problem. Not only that, but it syncs files to your computer much like Dropbox. You can use it for simply plain text or go beyond. While we prefer the app options that work with Dropbox because they're so efficient, if you need additional features and want the best word processor the web has to offer, Google Drive is a great choice.

Apps for Google Drive

What's the Bottom Line?

We like using Dropbox because it's open, simple, free, and reliable. We would like Simplenote if it worked a little better and offered a consistent experience on each platform. If either of these solutions are too simple for you, try Evernote for great consistency and a rich feature set or Google Docs for high compatibility and the openness you get with Dropbox. Every option gets your notes on pretty much every platform, so don't worry too much about your decision. In the end, you're just trying to get text everywhere. The minute details of how it happens are only so important.

Love,

Defining Storage Virtualization

It's been said that the virtual era is coming to a close and that the cloud era is upon us. That is true up to a point, but only because we as an industry have failed to define what virtualization actually is.

For many, virtualization stops at the server farm. Once the physical server has been loaded up with virtual machines and the infrastructure itself has been consolidated, virtualization is largely complete. Anyone who talks about storage or network virtualization is playing with semantics, the argument goes, because you're not really creating something out of nothing.

This is a false argument, however, because if you look closely at server virtualization, all you're doing is building an abstract layer on top of physical hardware that can be used to run multiple, logical servers. The same physical processors are still in use ? it's just that now they can be used more efficiently to handle more work.

In the storage and networking realms, we don't call this "virtualization" anymore because it is more properly described as "software-defined" architecture. And if that's the case, we probably shouldn't bother with "server virtualization" anymore and start talking about "software-defined processing."

Network Computing's David Hill points out that once we take the word "virtualization," or the even-more-dreaded "hypervisor," out of the storage equation, it becomes evident that software-defined storage (SDS) can deliver nearly all the benefits of server virtualization over the entire storage farm. With an abstract layer on top of physical storage, unused resources can be tapped, pools of storage can be provisioned for particularly heavy loads and a high degree of automation can be introduced to make storage both more efficient and more productive. To be truly effective, SDS will require some changes in the IT mindset, particularly when it comes to the fiefdoms that arise over dedicated infrastructure, but the benefits of change are likely to overcome any initial resistance.

That shouldn't be too hard once the front office gets a look at the cost-savings that SDS offers, according to Information Age's Kane Fulton. Current storage systems are largely proprietary, which means if you want to expand your footprint you have no choice but to build out existing infrastructure or add new, high-capacity systems. Under SDS, hardware expansion can go the commodity route like much of today's server infrastructure, and it should be easier to provision new cloud resources because integration can take place on the abstracted layer.

And let's not overlook the many operational benefits, says Steve Houk, COO of storage hypervisor pioneer DataCore Software. So far, most enterprises have been willing to place low-level applications in virtual environments, but mission-critical apps were considered too vital for the storage and networking conflicts that arise in virtual environments. With storage also functioning on the virtual plane, those conflicts should disappear. Intelligent software can now safely manage the increased traffic from virtual environments, delivering the appropriate resources to Tier 1 applications like ERP and OLAP.

But the story doesn't end here. Now that the three pillars of IT infrastructure ? servers, storage and networking ? can exist simultaneously on an abstract layer, the notion of a fully stateless, completely external IT environment is finally coming into focus. So far, the idea of outsourcing all enterprise resources over the cloud or in some other fashion has largely been more vision than reality.

Now that underlying infrastructure can be created in software and not just on silicon, we can stop talking about utility computing and start doing it.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. builders started construction last month on the most homes and apartments since July 2008, more evidence that the housing recovery is gaining momentum.

The Commerce Department said Tuesday that builders broke ground on homes in October at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 894,000. That's a 3.6 percent gain from September.

Single-family home construction dipped 0.2 percent to an annual rate of 594,000, down from a four-year high in the previous month. Apartment construction, which is more volatile from month to month, rose 10 percent to an annual rate of 285,000.

Applications for building permits, a sign of future construction, fell 2.7 percent to 866,000, after jumping 12 percent in September to a four-year high. Still, permit applications to build single-family homes rose to their highest level since July 2008.

"The overwhelming trend here is a housing market that has clearly shifted into recovery mode," Robert Kavcic, an economist at BMO Capital Markets, said in a note to clients.

Housing starts are 87 percent above the annual rate of 478,000 in April 2009, the recession low. That's still short of the 1.5 million annual rate considered healthy.

Superstorm Sandy had minimal impact on the October figures, the government said. It could delay some construction in November. Still, residential construction activity in region should get a boost soon after when builders begin replacing homes destroyed by the storm.

The housing market has been making consistent gains this year, helping prop up an economy that's being squeezed by a global slowdown and looming spending cuts and tax increases.

Builder confidence rose to its highest level in six and a half years, according to a survey by the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo. Their index of builder sentiment rose to 46 this month, up from 41 in October. It was the highest reading since May 2006, just before the housing bubble burst.

Readings below 50 signal negative sentiment about the housing market. The index has been rising since October 2011, when it was 17. It has surged 27 points in the past 12 months, the sharpest annual increase on record.

Sales of previously occupied homes rose 2.1 percent to 4.79 million in October, the National Association of Realtors said. Sales are near their highest level in five years, excluding temporary spikes in 2009 and 2010 when a homebuyer tax credit boosted purchases.

A key factor fueling the gains is a gradually improving economy, which has increased the number of people looking for homes. At the same time, fewer homes are available for sale. The low supply is helping push up prices.

In addition, mortgage rates have hit all-time lows. And rents are rising, making the purchase of a single-family home or condominium more attractive.

Though new homes represent less than 20 percent of the housing sales market, they have an outsize impact on the economy. Each home built creates an average of three jobs for a year and generates about $90,000 in tax revenue, according to data from the home builders group.
