Australia's Senex Energy Strikes Oil at Cuisiner-5 Well

Australia's Senex Energy said Friday that it has struck oil at its Cuisiner-5 well on PLA 303 on the Barta Block onshore Queensland.

The well was drilled to 5,745 feet (1,751 meters) on June 13, 2012, and oil was discovered in the oil-bearing sands of the Murta Formation over the interval of 5,354 to 5,397 feet (1,632 to 1,645 meters) with an estimated net oil pay of 7 feet (2 meters).?

The well has been cased and suspended as a future oil producer.

Cuisiner-5 is the second of four wells that was drilled in the Barta Block.?

Cuisiner-6, the next well on schedule, is expected to be spud this weekend followed by an exploration well.

Cuisiner-6 is sited almost one mile (1,300 meters) from the Cuisiner-1 discovery well. Drilling of the well is scheduled to start on June 23, 2012, targeting a depth of 5,755 feet (1,754 meters).

Australia's Santos holds a 60 percent operating interest in ATP 752 B, while Canada's Bengal holds a 25 percent operating interest. Senex holds the remaining 15 percent operating interest.?

Senex has produced over 550,000 barrels of oil since January 1, 2011.

Crews attack Utah fire that saw hundreds flee

SALT LAKE CITY?? Flames and smoke from a wildfire that forced several thousand people to flee had diminished by Saturday morning, allowing crews to mount an attack, but officials warned winds and dry heat would return by afternoon.

Officials earlier said some 2,300 homes were evacuated after the so-called Dump fire exploded on Friday, but by Saturday lowered that number to just under 600.

The fire had started Thursday in the Kiowa Valley near a landfill for Saratoga Springs, a town of 18,000 people about 35 miles south of Salt Lake City.

The blaze initially scorched about 750 acres of cheat grass, sage and pinyon juniper, but grew to 4,000 acres by Friday evening, stoked by gale-force winds and rising air temperatures, Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman Teresa Rigby said.

No homes were in imminent danger in Utah, but fire authorities said they were unable to predict when ground crews might be able to begin encircling the blaze.

"It's going to take a significant effort to get it contained," Utah Gov. Gary Herbert said after meeting with fire officials.

Herbert, who said that 20 of the state's 400 wildfires this season had been caused by target shooters, was asking the state's cities and counties to consider banning all fireworks and imposing ordinances to restrict the use of firearms.

"We can do better than that as Utahns," Herbert said. "Now is not a good time to take your gun outside and start shooting in cheat grass that's tinder dry."

The governor said the state would seek aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help cover costs of the fire. Nearly 200 firefighters were working the blaze, with air support from an air tanker and a helicopter, and more help was expected.

Sheriff's deputies with bullhorns rolled through Saratoga Springs neighborhoods ordering the first evacuations at about 10 a.m., after flames had burned to within half a mile of homes.

By midday, evacuations were expanded to include a portion of nearby Eagle Mountain, just east of Saratoga Springs.

Homeowner and commercial photographer Renee Keith said she and her husband decided the fire had burned "too close for comfort" and began packing before authorities ordered them out. Keith said she packed her children's baby books, the computer hard drives, a bag of clothes and camera equipment.

"I was kind of nervous, especially when we were packing the car," Keith told Reuters. "Ash was falling on us as we were pulling away."

The Keiths said their top concern was a plant that makes explosives for the construction and mining industries. The fire was reportedly burning within a mile of the factory, but authorities said the flames appeared to have burned around it.

The blaze was one of 15 large, uncontained wildfires being fought across the country on Friday, most in six Western states - Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Nevada, New Mexico and Arizona, the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho, reported.

Although federal authorities say the fire season got off to an early start this summer in parts of the Northern Rockies, the acreage burned nationwide is about on par with the 10-year average for this time of year, according to fire agency records.

The biggest by far is the Whitewater-Baldy Complex fire in New Mexico, that state's largest on record, which has charred almost 300,000 acres. That blaze is nearly 90 percent contained.

In Colorado, fire managers early on Friday reported progress against a 68,000-acre fire burning west of Fort Collins, near the Wyoming border, after two days of cooler temperatures, calmer winds and higher humidity.

But fire officials lost precious ground later when gusty winds and high temperatures propelled a renewed expansion of the lightning-caused blaze, Colorado's most destructive on record.

The latest confirmed tally of property losses stood at 191 homes, which was sure to climb in the latest flare-up. The fire has been blamed for one death, a 62-year-old grandmother whose remains were found last week in a cabin where she lived alone.

Italy enters the debt crisis after Spain rescue

ROME: The 100 billion euro ($126 billion) rescue for Spain's banks moved Italy to the frontline of Europe's debt crisis as an initial rally in the country's bonds fizzled on concern it may be the next to succumb.

Italy's 10-year bonds reversed early gains on Monday in the first trading after the Spanish bailout and declined for a fourth day, sending the yield up 7 basis points to 5.84%.

"The scrutiny of Italy is high and certainly will not dissipate after the deal with Spain," Nicola Marinelli, who oversees $153 million at Glendevon King Asset Management in London, said in an interview.

"This bailout does not mean that Italy will be under attack, but it means that investors will pay attention to every bit of information before deciding to buy or to sell Italian bonds."

Italy has 2 trillion euros of debt, more as a share of its economy than any advanced nation after Greece and Japan. The Treasury has to sell more than 35 billion euros of bonds and bills per month -- more than the annual output of each of the three smallest euro members, Cyprus, Estonia and Malta.

Spanish Economy Minister Luis de Guindos said on June 9 that he would request as much as 100 billion euros in emergency loans from the euro area to shore up a banking system hobbled by more than 180 billion euros of bad assets.

Mounting concern about the state of Spain's banks and public finances drove the country's borrowing costs to near euro-era records last month, dragging up Italian rates in the process.

Investors initially appeared relieved by the news, with the euro gaining as much as 1% and the yield on Spain and Italy's 10-year bonds falling 12 basis points and 15 basis points. Both gave up their gains.

"The problem for Italy is that where Spain goes, there's always the perception that Italy could follow," Nicholas Spiro, managing director at Spiro Sovereign Strategy in London, said in an interview.

"There is insufficient differentiation within the financial markets. It is clear as the light of day and has been that Spain's fundamentals are a lot direr than Italy's. That hasn't stopped Italy suffering from Spanish contagion."

The jobless rate is less than half of Spain's 24 percent, and Italy didn't suffer a real estate bust, leaving its banks healthy by southern European standards. The budget deficit was 3.9 percent of GDP last year, less than half that of Spain.

LONDON (AP) ? More than 1,000 boats will sail down the River Thames on Sunday in a flotilla tribute to Queen Elizabeth II's 60 years on the throne that organizers are calling the biggest pageant on the river for 350 years.

Despite cool, drizzly weather, hundreds of thousands of people lined the riverbanks between Hammersmith and Tower Bridge in London, feting the British monarch whose longevity has given her the status of the nation's favorite grandmother.

Spectators cheered the queen and members of her family as they arrived for their trip aboard a flower-bedecked royal barge, accompanied by skiffs, barges, narrow boats, motor launches, row boats and sailing vessels from around the world.

The queen wore a silver and white dress and matching coat, embroidered with gold, silver and ivory spots and embellished with Swarovski crystals to evoke the river, as she and her husband Prince Philip were ferried by motor launch to the barge Spirit of Chartwell

Prince William and his wife the Duchess of Cambridge ? he in his Royal Air Force uniform, she in a red Alexander McQueen dress ? and Prince Harry were among senior royals accompanying the queen on the river trip.

Hundreds of people ignored the persistent rain and camped out overnight to secure prime riverside spots. Crowds swelled into the thousands Sunday, with revelers in hats, flags, leggings and rain ponchos adorned with the Union flag mixing with burger and cotton candy vendors along the 7-mile (11-kilometer) route.

"It would have been wonderful if it had been sunny like last Sunday but we have come prepared," said 57-year-old Christine Steele. "We have got blankets, brollies (umbrellas), flags and bunting. We even got our glittery Union Jack hats and wigs, and the Champagne is on ice."

The spectacle is a tribute to Britain's past ? monarchs used the river as their main highway for centuries, and naval power built the island nation's once-great empire ? as well as to its abiding love of boats and the sea.

River processions were once common in London. The last comparable royal pageant was held for King Charles II in 1662, when diarist Samuel Pepys recorded boats so numerous he could "see no water."

Sunday's flotilla will include more than three dozen "Dunkirk Little Ships," private boats that rescued thousands of British soldiers from the beaches of France after the German invasion in 1940 ? a defeat that became a major victory for wartime morale.

The four-day Diamond Jubilee celebrations also include thousands of street parties across the country on Sunday. Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, joined hundreds of people for a damp al fresco lunch on Piccadilly, one of London's main shopping streets.

Not everyone in Britain is celebrating. The anti-monarchist group Republic held a riverbank protest Sunday to oppose the wave of jubilee-mania.

"People are sick and tired of being told they must celebrate 60 years of one very privileged, very remote and very uninspiring head of state," said the group's chief executive, Graham Smith. "The hereditary system is offensive to all the democratic values this country has fought for in the past."

Jubilee celebrations kicked off Saturday with a royal day at the races, as the queen watched a horse with the courtly name of Camelot win the Epsom Derby.

The 86-year-old monarch and her husband, Prince Philip, visited Epsom racecourse south of the capital for the Derby, one of the year's biggest horse racing meetings.

The queen is a racing fan and horse breeder who has attended the Derby for decades and reads the Racing Post each day over breakfast, although unlike many of her subjects she does not gamble.

On Monday the queen will attend a pop concert in front of Buckingham Palace featuring Elton John and Paul McCartney.

Jubilee events end Tuesday with a religious service at St. Paul's Cathedral, a carriage procession through the streets of London and the queen's appearance with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren on the palace balcony.

The queen took the throne in 1952 on the death of her father, King George VI, and most Britons have known no other monarch.

Prime Minister David Cameron ? the 12th British leader of the queen's reign ? paid tribute to the monarch's "extraordinary level of physical energy, mental energy, and above all devotion to her people, to the institutions of this country, to the way our democracy works."

In a jubilee gift from Britain's politicians, lawmakers from the three main parties have backed a motion calling for the tower housing Big Ben ? the beloved London bell that chimes the quarter hour ? to be renamed the Elizabeth Tower in the queen's honor. It's currently called the Clock Tower.

While many Britons used the long weekend to relax ? and an estimated 2 million left the country on vacation ? writers and religious leaders used the occasion to reflect on how Britain has changed over the queen's reign, from a war-scarred imperial power to a middle-sized power with oversized cultural clout.

Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, spiritual head of the Anglican Church, expressed a widely held view when he said Britain had been lucky to have Elizabeth as monarch throughout a period of rapid change.

"It seems to me that what her importance has been for most people in this country has been as a sign of stability, a sign of some kind of security," Williams said in a jubilee video message.

The death of Bassel Shahade, a young Syrian filmmaker who studied in the United States and returned to his country to document the rebellion, was a harsh blow to his friends, who remembered him as a passionate adventurer, The Times writes. These are a few of the films Shahade made, along with others made in?commemoration.

Shahade directed this documentary, ?Singing to Freedom,? which features interviews about nonviolent resistance with Syrian attorney Razan Zeitouna, political theorist Noam Chomsky and author Erica Chenoweth. It shows Syrian protesters chanting, ?The people want the downfall of the regime!?

Another short film called ?Saturday Morning Gift,? widely circulated after Shahade died, is based on an interview with a young boy recalling his experiences in the 2006 war in Lebanon between Hezbollah paramilitaries and Israel. The film is intimate and spare, almost dreamlike.

Shahade filmed and edited this third film, ?Carrying Eid to Camps,? which shows people handing out food and toys in camps for the displaced during the Muslim holiday of Eid. When the film was created, a severe drought had plunged millions of Syrians into extreme poverty. "Thanks to everyone who contributed in carrying Eid to camps of the drought displaced people,? the video caption says.

After Shahade was killed in Homs, this tribute video surfaced, appearing to show him teaching other Syrians. Shahade came back to his country to share his skills with amateur videographers.

This last video is said to show friends of Shahade standing around his coffin with pictures of him, reciting prayers. Toward the end of the video, a group of men load the coffin onto a vehicle.
