60-Million-Year Debate on Grand Canyon?s Age

Richard Perry/The New York Times

New research suggests that the Grand Canyon is about 70 million years old, but the prevailing view is that it is much younger.

How old is the Grand Canyon? Old enough to be gazed on by dinosaurs, which died out 65 million years ago, or closer to six million years old, formed about when the earliest human ancestors began walking upright?

A bitter controversy among geologists over this question edged into the open on Thursday, when a report published in the journal Science offered new support for the old-canyon hypothesis, which is not the prevailing one. In the report, Rebecca M. Flowers of the University of Colorado and Kenneth A. Farley of the California Institute of Technology used an improved dating technique based on the radioactive decay of uranium and thorium atoms into helium atoms in a mineral known as apatite. They said this yielded a thermal record of these rocks under the canyon floor, hot at great depths but cooler the closer they were to the surface.

An analysis of the data, the geologists said, revealed where surface erosion had gouged out canyons and how much time had passed since there was significant natural excavation in the Grand Canyon region. They concluded in the report that the western segment of the canyon was carved to within a few hundred yards of modern depths by about 70 million years ago.

The more ancient origin would put much of the canyon in place in the last epoch of the dinosaurs. Publicity for the journal report duly noted that one of nature?s wonders, dinosaurs, might well have stood and gawked at another wonder, one of today?s most majestic tourist attractions.

This was only one of the immediate objections to the findings raised by geologists favoring the young-canyon school of thought. They said that the research results had been hyped. One critic, Karl E. Karlstrom of the University of New Mexico, noted that the early-canyon model had been proposed before and was ?now in what I think will be a short-lived revival.?

If the interpretation of the findings proves to be correct, it contradicts the prevailing hypothesis that the entire canyon was formed as recently as five million to six million years ago, advocated by many of the notable authorities on Grand Canyon geology. These dates were drawn from an examination of pebbles and other sediments from upstream reaches of the Colorado River system that washed up at the western exit of the canyon.

Dr. Flowers said that when she started this research seven years ago, she had not expected to find the canyon?s presumed age to be so ancient. But the first set of experiments with the radioactive helium technique in 2008 was followed up with a new round of tests and more sophisticated levels of analysis.

In their paper, Dr. Flowers and Dr. Farley wrote that their findings implied a dichotomy in the late eastern and early western canyon origins. This history, they said, ?supports a model in which much of Grand Canyon incision was accomplished by an ancient Cretaceous river that flowed eastward from western highlands,? not from northeast to west, as today?s Colorado River does. This was followed by a ?reversal of the river?s course as topography rose in the east and collapsed in the west,? in consequence of the rising Rocky Mountains.

Dr. Flowers said in an interview that the findings supported the ancient-origin hypothesis advanced in recent years by Brian P. Wernicke, a Caltech geologist, who had proposed such a chain of events. It is still not clear when the eastern and western canyons merged into the canyon as it is seen today.

She also said she foresaw ?a fair amount of controversy? over the research results. That turned out to be an understatement, even before the official publication date.

Dr. Karlstrom of the University of New Mexico is a leader among geologists who have devoted much of their careers to Grand Canyon studies. When reporters called this week, he was prepared with four pages of criticism of the new research. He pointed out that at a meeting two years ago of the most active Grand Canyon researchers, ?a near consensus view was expressed? in support of the young-canyon hypothesis.

As a rule of thumb, he defined the Grand Canyon as ?the canyon you see from the rim today.? How fragments of paleocanyons and paleorivers contributed to the Grand Canyon?s origin is not established, he said.

Dr. Karlstrom was not entirely negative in his assessment of the research. He praised the thermochronology method the researchers used, saying it ?offers one of the few ways we may be able to reconstruct past landscapes in rocks that have long since been eroded away.? The Flowers-Farley team, he added, ?is pushing welcome new advances? in this dating technology.

?Less welcome to me,? he continued, ?is their attempt to push the interpretation of their new data to their limits without consideration of the whole range of other geologic data sets.?

Correction: November 29, 2012

An earlier version of this article misstated the direction in which the Colorado River flows. It flows from northeast to west, not from west to northeast.

DIY Wi-Fi Antenna Cheaply Extends Your Wireless Network

DIY Wi-Fi Antenna Cheaply Extends Your Wireless NetworkWe've shared tons of ways to boost your home Wi-Fi, but if you need something a bit more powerful, this DIY antenna can stretch your wireless network much further.

DIYer Danilo wanted to share his internet access across multiple apartments, and traditional methods just weren't doing the trick. He wanted to try out a bigger antenna, but before buying one, cooked up a DIY option himself to see how well it worked. All i took was a bit of copper wiring, some aluminum foil, and some tupperware (to keep it protected from the elements, since it sat outside). The result was so good that he didn't even need to buy an antenna. You'll need to be able to solder, but if that's already a skill you have under your belt, this'll probably be a quick and easy project. Hit the link to see more.

Apple Wins Dutch Ban On Galaxy Devices - Business Insider

Steve Kovach, Business Insider

A Samsung Galaxy Tablet.

Apple Inc. won a Dutch sales ban on some of Samsung Electronics Co.?s older Galaxy tablets and smartphones after a Netherlands court ruled in a patent lawsuit.

Samsung?s Galaxy products using certain versions of Google Inc?s Android operating system infringe an Apple patent describing a way to navigate images in a photo gallery, Judge Peter Blok said today.

Samsung last year tweaked a feature on the smartphones to bypass a Dutch injunction. Today?s ban concerns products that are still on the market with the old patent-infringing feature.

The two companies continue to clash over the intellectual property behind the $219 billion smartphone market, even after Apple settled all its lawsuits with HTC Corp. earlier this month. Samsung is trying to hit back after a California court ruled in August it had to pay $1.05 billion for copying Apple products.

Samsung must pay Apple a penalty of 100,000 euros ($129,000) every day it violates the ruling, the Dutch court said. Samsung also has to tell Apple how much profit it made from sales of infringing Galaxy products since June 2011. A separate court procedure will determine how much of that profit Samsung must pay Apple.

The ruling is the latest in a long line of disputes in courts across the globe as the rivals fight for dominance in the smart phone and tablet-computer markets.

UCLA football revs up for Stanford rematch

As practice came to a conclusion on Tuesday morning, the UCLA football team started to exit the field.

While most exited to the locker room to start their day, junior defensive end Owamagbe Odighizuwa went to the practice dummies to work on his technique, continuing to prepare for the coming Pac-12 Championship game against Stanford.

?I need to bring my A game this week,? Odighizuwa said. ?I need to play physical, I need to play fast and I need to be technically sound to beat that offensive line.?

Last week, Odighizuwa was called upon to play a stand-up defensive end/outside linebacker hybrid position that he had not played yet this season to combat Stanford?s size advantage.

Odighizuwa, who stands at 6 feet 3 inches and 270 pounds, is a big upgrade size-wise from the usual players at that position.

?I felt good about playing there,? Odighizuwa said. ?According to the coaches, I did a pretty good job playing that position and I was happy to get out there and help.?

Throughout the season, Odighizuwa has shown versatility by playing at both the right and left end positions, and his ability to transition smoothly has not gone unnoticed.

?I?ve been impressed with Owa?s ability to adapt week in and week out with the things we?ve asked him to do,? coach Jim Mora said. ?Last week, we had him play that pseudo-outside linebacker position and he did a good job.?

Odighizuwa has 31 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and two sacks off the bench this season, and the coaching staff has been pleased with his production.

?He?s played well for us,? Mora said. ?He?s always been very physical but he?s becoming much more aware and a much better technician and I?m excited to see where he takes it.?

Kicking in the rain

Freshman kicker Ka?imi Fairbairn has dealt with adversity this season, and this week?s contest in Palo Alto, Calif. looks to present yet another hurdle for the young kicker.

The weather forecast shows a likely chance of rain on Friday, which could mean messy kicking conditions for Fairbairn.

?Every kick is the same no matter what environment,? Fairbairn said. ?The coaches work every week on trying to get us out of our comfort zone to make sure we don?t get fazed.?

Fairbairn hails from Hawaii where there is no shortage of rain, so he isn?t the least bit concerned about the potential rainfall.

?I think we?re ready for it,? Fairbairn said. ?I?ve probably kicked in worse conditions, so I?m not worried about it.?

Round two in the trenches

UCLA?s offensive line got beaten last week against a good Stanford front seven, to put it lightly.

The Bruins? offensive line gave up seven sacks while committing several penalties that put the UCLA offense on its heels all night.

Redshirt freshman center Jake Brendel, who received All-Pac-12 honorable mention this week, had one of his worst performances of the season as he racked up three penalties against the Cardinal.

?They are very disciplined and very committed to their technique,? Brendel said. ?We had a few assignment errors and had a few penalties that were unacceptable against such a sound team.?

Brendel knows that in order for UCLA to win Friday, both he and the offensive line will have to step up their game.

?We have to stick to our game plan,? Brendel said. ?We need to make sure our communication gets better and we don?t miss assignments. If we do, it should fix all of the problems on our end.?

Miami-Dade mayor tells election advisory group county should have ?best electoral process in the nation?

Members of a group examining Miami-Dade elections peppered a county attorney and the elections supervisor with questions Wednesday morning as they began their review of state and local laws and practices, to eventually suggest improvements.

They were particularly interested in how Miami-Dade verifies voter signatures on absentee ballots, where the county can set up early-voting sites and how to speed up the voter check-in process at precincts on Election Day.

County Mayor Carlos Gimenez convened the election advisory group after the presidential election earlier this month was marked by long lines and a surge of absentee ballots that took several days to count. The group met for the first time Wednesday at the county elections headquarters in Doral.

Gimenez welcomed the 13 group members, who then listened to presentations by Elections Supervisor Penelope Townsley and the assistant county attorney in charge of elections, Oren Rosenthal.

Townsley, whose department runs about 20 elections a year, outlined absentee, early and Election Day voting preparations and procedures, showing off the department?s master computer file that keeps track of tasks and deadlines and a web video that explains to voters how their absentee ballots are tracked.

?We?re very proud of the policies and procedures that we have in place,? she said. ?However, we do realize that there?s opportunity for improvement.?

Townsley went over challenges that affected the Nov. 6 general election, including a 10-12 page ballot that required the department to issue emergency procurements so its vendors could outfit absentee-ballot machines to accommodate that many pages. The machines prepare ballots to be mailed and sort and open ballots received, though trained elections employees are in charge of verifying voter signatures.

Signature-verification software exists, but the department has not bought it because it has not found software it considers accurate enough, Townsley said.

The department also had to redesign absentee-ballot envelopes to fit the lengthy ballot.

Though Miami-Dade had enlisted 150 temporary workers to assist with ballot counting, Townsley said only 60 of them showed up to work. The others said the elections work was too short, or that they feared working would result in their becoming ineligible for unemployment benefits.

Another problem: The department was overwhelmed with voter calls about absentee ballots, receiving on average 2,000 calls a day and more than 7,500 on Election Day.

And for the first time this year, state law required counties to count absentee ballots continuously, beginning on Election Day and until the count was complete, requiring round-the-clock shifts for workers and the canvassing board that has the ultimate say on rejecting invalid voter signatures.

The elections department has not yet submitted its ?after-action report,? a post-mortem detailing how things went during the election.

Several of the questions raised by advisory group members would require changes to state law. For example, Florida limits early-voting sites to elections offices, city halls and permanent libraries ? though the county could spend more money to open more of those sites.

State law also requires counties to identify early-voting sites 30 days in advance, which essentially prohibits opening last-minute sites due to overwhelming voter interest.

Researchers use shock tube for insight into physics early in blasts

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? Sandia's one-of-a-kind multiphase shock tube began with a hallway conversation that led to what engineer Justin Wagner describes as the only shock tube in the world that can look at how shock waves interact with dense particle fields.

The machine is considered multiphase because it can study shock wave propagation through a mixture of gas and solid particles.

Shock tubes -- machines that generate shock waves without an explosion -- have been around for decades. What makes Sandia's unique is its ability to study how densely clustered particles disperse during an explosion. That's important because better understanding of the physics during the first tens of microseconds of a blast leads to better computer models of what happens in explosions.

"Not having this correct in those codes could have implications for predicting different explosives properties," Wagner said.

Understanding how particles move and react in the early part of a blast will help Sandia respond to such national security challenges as improving explosives, mitigating blasts or assessing the vulnerability of personnel, weapons and structures.

The project started when Steve Beresh of Sandia's aerosciences department and Sean Kearney of the Labs' thermal and fluid experimental sciences asked a since-retired colleague what he'd like to measure that he hadn't been able to. He started talking about some of the physics missing from the models used for predicting explosives, "and Sean and I looked at each other and said, 'We think we could do that,'" Beresh said.

They came up with the idea of a multiphase shock tube that would enable researchers to study particle dispersal in dense gas-solid flows.

The machine was fired for the first time in April 2010. Experiments and diagnostics are complicated, so team members are still gathering data they eventually will incorporate into codes used at Sandia and elsewhere.

"It's clear that we've learned some things that weren't known before," Beresh said. "Those physics are important to a code."

The stainless steel and aluminum shock tube, about 22 feet long, is divided into a high-pressure or driver section that creates the shock wave and a low-pressure or driven section, with a diaphragm between the two. Pressure builds up in the cylindrical driver section and when it gets high enough, the diaphragm ruptures. Spherical particles loaded into a hopper above the low-pressure section flow into the shock tube before the diaphragm breaks, creating a dense particle curtain that's hit by the shock wave.

The project, initially funded under Sandia's Laboratory Directed Research and Development program, hired Wagner to oversee the machine's design and building. "When we hired Justin we had an empty room and a blank sheet of paper. Now we have a shock tube that is different from what anybody else in the world has," Beresh said.

Particles in an explosion start out tightly packed. As the explosive process continues, they disperse and quickly become widely spaced. But the physics of the densely packed particles at the start of the explosion are crucial to everything that comes later. They are not yet fully understood, and thus limit current models, Wagner and Beresh said.

"The important thing about the shock tube is it generates a planar shock wave," Wagner said. "We study the interaction of the shock wave with a dense field of particles to understand the physics relevant to explosives processes."

Sandia's machine uses such diagnostics as high-speed pressure measurements, high-speed imaging and flash X-ray to measure gas and particle properties, and it's adding laser-based diagnostics, team members said.

"We can get different things from the X-ray diagnostics, different things from the laser-based diagnostics, different things from temperature and pressure measurements, and by piecing all of that together we get a better view of the physics that are occurring in the shot," Beresh said.

The machine's unique diagnostic capabilities demonstrate Sandia's ability to collaborate. The team particularly singled out the X-ray expertise offered by Enrico Quintana and Jerry Stoker's group in the experimental mechanics/non-destructive evaluation & model validation organization. Elton Wright of geothermal research also made sizeable contributions.

The diagnostics required to get useful information from the machine are difficult and expensive, Wagner said. "There's a reason why it hasn't been done thoroughly in the past," he said.

A lot of data for modeling comes from explosions, but it's difficult to isolate what happens in each part of a blast, Kearney said. "Whereas if you do an experiment like this you can delve deeper into what is really happening," he said. "But it's just one piece of the puzzle and they're all important."

Google adds Drive integration to popup composer, ups attachment limit to 10 gigs

If you've used Gmail to send attachments, chances are you've hit that 25MB limit once or twice. Beginning today, Google is rolling out a new Drive integration feature, letting you insert files that you already have in the cloud, effectively boosting the limit 400 fold to 10 gigs. The feature isn't available to everyone just yet, but if you're using the new composer tool and see the Drive logo in the bottom toolbar, you should be good to go. Simply click the icon and choose your file -- if the intended recipient doesn't already have access, you'll be prompted to give them the nod. And, because the file is already stored in the cloud, any changes you make after the message goes out will be visible to your recipient, effectively letting you tweak that presentation or term paper after the submission deadline has passed. You'll find the full scoop at the source link below.

whitehead's Site - nimitarora53: Malicious Ways that Spam Can ...

Spam can come in many forms, including ?special? toolbars and comment spam designed to post comments on your site that are false and sometimes embarrassing.? In a recent post from Google, we?re told that Google will penalize our sites if too much spam is tracked to the site.? This could be disastrous for your business and frustrating for you.?

Here are two ways that unchecked spam can hurt and possibly ruin your sites:

  • Rankings.? Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the main way that most marketers build their sites for quality traffic and great rankings.? But spamming techniques can ruin your good rankings by luring visitors to your site(s) by droves in an unethical manner.

Malicious Ways that Spam Can Ruin Your BusinessSpamming techniques such as invisible text, stuffing unrelated keywords into your content, and duplicate content can alert search engines that you?re contriving to get traffic in an unethical manner, and they will ?red flag? those sites and penalize the site owners.

  • Credibility.? It?s so easy to lose your online credibility with spamming techniques.? Blogs are especially susceptible to these methods because visitors and participators in the blog don?t want to be inundated with useless content and multiple backlinks that have nothing to do with the purpose of the blog.

These spammers can use the legitimate backlinks on your blog to sell to other ?black hat? Internet Markets, causing your blog followers to fall by the wayside like flies.

Your reputation and ethics are so important to anything you do online while building your site(s).? Keep appraised of spammers who are out for a quick buck and who can ruin interest in your online efforts.

Web Spam Vs. Email Spam

You should know that there?s a difference between web spam and email spam.? The simplest explanation is that email spam is out for you to purchase a product, and web spammers (comments and/or blog posts) want your visitors to purchase their products.? You?re not the target ? but your clients are ? and that can drive them off of your site or blog in droves.

Malicious Ways that Spam Can Ruin Your BusinessThere is a service that you can turn to that will automatically delete comment and blog spam so that you don?t have to worry about it anymore.? The service is called Akismet, and you can access it through plugins such as WordPress or the Akismet API.? All you have to do is register and API key (like a password) which is your own private access to your account.

Then, each time a comment, pingback or trackback?appears on your site, the Akismet service tests it and either Okays it or turns it down.? You don?t have to do a thing ? and, you can be assured that the spam designed to ruin your site and steal sales and customers from you is taken care of.? Click Here to Tweet this Post.

When you use a plugin such as Akismet to stop spam from invading your site, you?ll keep Google and other search engines from penalizing your sites and from losing credibility with your followers.

Malicious Ways that Spam Can Ruin Your BusinessI?ve spoken about ?black hat techniques? before, and web spamming is definitely one of the worst.? They?re hoping you?ll disregard them because these spam techniques use flattery, praise and other positive comments to catch you off guard.

There?s no way for you to know if these comments and posts are legitimate.? That?s why it?s a good thing to use a plug in like Akismet to check it out for you.? Just be sure you?re protected from these spammers who are thieves and who can run your business off the Internet.?

Cyber Monday: Work ethic is no match for shoppers' zeal for a deal

Black Friday just set a record for e-commerce in a single day: $1 billion. But deal-hungry digital shoppers, despite being back at work, were pushing the tally for Cyber Monday higher still.

The upstart shopping day began its jog to the head of the class last year when Cyber Monday was the busiest shopping day of the year, according to Experian?s general manager of global market research, Bill Tancer. Online traffic on this first-day-back-to-work grew from 138 million online visits in 2010 to 177 million total US visits to the top 500 retail sites in 2011, a 29 percent increase, notes Mr. Lancer.

Faster Internet connections, the proliferation of daily deals, and smart phones capable of laser-targeting the best prices have all led to this explosion of digital shopping. But the biggest reason may be the sheer dedication of today?s shopper to getting the best deal possible, says Lancer.

?There is no indication that shoppers are getting tired of comparison shopping or checking as many sites as possible before actually purchasing,? he says, adding that on the contrary, today?s highly-mobile and gadget-equipped consumers are maximizing the ability of their tablets and smart phones to lead them to the best online deals.

Even before the day picked up its nickname from a shop.com?press release back in 2005, Patrick Byrne, CEO of e-tailer Overstock, says his team tracked this uptick after the November holiday.?

?People were exhausted after their first weekend of holiday shopping,? he points out, and heading online was a relief. ?They were coming back into the office to do some real shopping,? he says, using the faster Internet speeds most users found at work.

That equation has changed as broadband connections have become more widespread and commonplace. Shoppers are no longer tethered to their work-desks, as tablets and smartphones for easy price comparisons and access to daily online coupons have turned the day into a sprint.

Cyber Monday and other specially-anointed shopping days early in the holiday season hit growing pains last year when some major sites ? most notably Best Buy ? waited until a few days before Dec. 25 to inform consumers that their orders would not be fulfilled due to everything from lost information to shortages of inventory.

Consumers have a short fuse for this kind of online performance, with recent studies revealing that up to 62 percent of users will leave a site if they encounter more than two obstacles.

E-tailers have to plan for the worst moments, notes Byrne, adding that as a solely online business, his company has worked hard to anticipate problems before they can undermine sales.

?We plan for the spikes, not the average, and build our systems to handle that kind of inventory and online demand,? he says, adding that an educated consumer is his best customer. ?People are getting smarter all the time with apps and other tools,? he says, adding that he expects Cyber Monday to grow at least 10 percent this year, ?along with the rest of Internet traffic.?

While online businesses have shored up their defenses against breakdowns, Cyber Monday shoppers will benefit from?a hard reality of retailing, says?Niraj Shah, CEO and co-founder of Wayfair.com, the second largest online home goods retailer.

Retailers plan ahead for the holidays and order a certain volume of product to stock in?US-based warehouses, he notes.?Once those products are sold, he adds via e-mail, ?there is no possibility of new shipments coming in by the holidays, so there really is a limited quantity of in-demand products.?

?Cyber Monday is an opportunity for consumers to score deals on the products that retailers are predicting to be in demand for the season,? he says. ?Shopping early is important if you are interested in finding the season?s hottest gifts.?

DEAR ABBY: I'm a 51-year-old man. Three years ago, my first and only marriage ended after 20 years. Within 2 years of national title, Auburn fires football coach

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) ? Gene Chizik led Auburn to perhaps the greatest season in the program's history, and two years later to maybe its worst.

The rapid fall from a national championship to 3-9 and the Southeastern Conference doormat led to Chizik's firing Sunday, the day after a humbling 49-0 loss to No. 2 Alabama that showed just how far the program has slipped.

The Tigers endured the worst slide within two years of winning a national championship of any team since the Associated Press poll started in 1936 and hadn't lost this many games since going 0-10 in 1950. The decision came 17 months after Auburn gave Chizik a contract worth some $3.5 million annually through 2015 with a hefty buyout.

Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs said he informed Chizik Saturday night that he would recommend to President Jay Gogue the next morning that Chizik not be retained.

He said he had concerns with lopsided losses in 2011 but grew "very concerned in our fundamental approach to the game" after the Arkansas game.

"I had hoped our team would show some improvement this season," Jacobs said. "Unfortunately it didn't. The competition in our league is fierce. I decided we could not risk falling further behind by waiting for another year and hoping for improvement."

The players were informed in a team meeting Sunday.

"I'm extremely disappointed with the way this season turned out and I apologize to the Auburn family and our team for what they have had to endure," Chizik said in a statement released by Auburn. "In my 27 years of coaching, I have gained an understanding of the high expectations in this profession. When expectations are not met, I understand changes must be made."

The Tigers went from 14-0 with a perfect SEC record with Cam Newton leading the offense in 2010 to 3-9 and 0-8, losing their final three league games by a combined 150-21. Auburn was blown out by Texas A&M (63-21) and Georgia (38-0) but the finale was even more painful for Tigers fans.

The Crimson Tide cruised to a six-touchdown halftime lead and the second-most lopsided Iron Bowl victory in history, behind only the Tide's 55-0 win in 1948.

"While we experienced a tremendous low in 2012, I will always be proud of the incredible highs that we achieved, including three bowl victories, an SEC championship and a national championship," Chizik said.

He was 33-19 in four seasons and 15-17 in SEC games.

Auburn said the total buyout for Chizik and his assistant coaches is $11.09 million. Chizik's buyout is expected to total $7.5 million and will be paid in monthly installments for the next four years.

Six assistants are under contract through June 30, 2013 while defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder, offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler and wide receivers coach Trooper Taylor have deals extending another year beyond that.

The buyouts could be reduced if the coaches find other jobs.

Auburn joins Arkansas, Tennessee and Kentucky as SEC teams with job openings showing the huge divide in a league with six teams ranked in the Top 11.

Auburn tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen said players gave Chizik a warm ovation after the team meeting.

"I think we did what he deserved and we gave him a standing ovation and clapped for him," he said. "There's so much love for coach Chizik on this team. Would we have loved to see him get another year, another opportunity? Yes, but at the same time we understand where Jay Jacobs is coming from. Three wins isn't going to cut it in our league."

Defensive tackle Jeff Whitaker said, "It's kind of crazy right now. I had a special bond with Coach Chizik."

Chizik inserted tailback Tre Mason on the final play against Alabama to get him to 1,000 yards. The next day, Mason saw his coach get fired.

"It was a rough day for everybody," Mason said. "It's tough. There are going to be a lot of tears shed because there are a lot of relationships that may be put on hold or come to an end today. I have nothing negative to say about coach Chizik. He's done a lot for me and this program. I wish him the best of luck in his future."

Chizik had sandwiched two 8-5 seasons around the national title, but never approached the success of 2010, when Newton won the Heisman Trophy. The Tigers were 7-17 in SEC games outside of 2010 during his tenure.

His hiring was criticized by some fans after Chizik went 5-19 in two seasons at Iowa State and lost the last 10 games of his first head coaching job.

Jacobs was heckled at the airport after making the hire.

Chizik had been defensive coordinator on unbeaten teams at Auburn and Texas.

A search committee comprised of former Heisman Trophy winners Pat Sullivan and Bo Jackson and former Tigers fullback Mac Crawford will assist Jacobs, the school said.

Jacobs said he wants a proven winner ? not necessarily an experienced head coach ? who follows the rules and stresses academics.

A transition year in 2012 might have been expected.

Chizik had to replace the offensive and defensive coordinators after last season. Chizik made an ill-fated switch from Gus Malzahn's no-huddle, spread offense to a pro-style system with the hiring of former Temple offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler.

The Tigers struggled in the transition, partly because of shaky quarterback play and ended the season with freshman Jonathan Wallace under center.

Auburn ranked at or near the bottom of the SEC in every major statistical category offensively and defensively.

Chizik's tenure was marred by off-the-field problems, too, to the extent that he had employees of a private firm run curfew checks on players this season.

Four members of the 2010 national championship team were arrested on robbery charges in March 2011. Antonio Goodwin was convicted in April and sentenced to 15 years in prison. Dakota Mosley, Michael McNeil and Shaun Kitchens are awaiting trial.

Two-time 1,000-yard rusher Mike Dyer transferred to Arkansas State with Malzahn after being indefinitely suspended before the bowl game.

Freshman quarterback Zeke Pike was arrested in June for public intoxication and later dismissed from the team. Starting center Reese Dismukes was suspended for the opener against Clemson following a public intoxication arrest.

Auburn is also the subject of an NCAA investigation that includes the recruitment of Memphis running back Jovon Robinson, who was ruled ineligible after a guidance counselor admitted to creating a fake transcript.

Chizik's contract includes a clause that it wouldn't owe the buyout money if he is fired for cause, including findings of major rules violations or significant or repetitive violations" involving him or his program.

Chizik and Auburn have weathered past NCAA scrutiny. The governing body closed investigations into the recruitment of Newton and allegations from four former players that they were paid thousands of dollars during their college careers.

"I've got the utmost confidence in our NCAA compliance," Jacobs said. "Basically it boils down to winning and losing. Winning three games is unacceptable."

Clashes erupt across Egypt over Morsi's new powers

CAIRO (AP) ? Thousands of opponents of Egypt's Islamist president clashed with his supporters in cities across the country Friday, burning several offices of the Muslim Brotherhood, in the most violent and widespread protests since Mohammed Morsi came to power, sparked by his move to grant himself sweeping powers.

The violence, which left 100 people injured, reflected the increasingly dangerous polarization in Egypt over what course it will take nearly two years after the fall of autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Critics of Morsi accused him of seizing dictatorial powers with his decrees a day earlier that make him immune to judicial oversight and give him authority to take any steps against "threats to the revolution". On Friday, the president spoke before a crowd of his supporters massed in front of his palace and said his edicts were necessary to stop a "minority" that was trying to block the goals of the revolution.

"There are weevils eating away at the nation of Egypt," he said, pointing to old regime loyalists he accused of using money to fuel instability and to members of the judiciary who work under the "umbrella" of the courts to "harm the country."

Clashes between his opponents and members of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood erupted in several cities. In the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, anti-Morsi crowds attacked Brotherhood backers coming out of a mosque, raining stones and firecrackers on them. The Brothers held up prayer rugs to protect themselves and the two sides pelted each other with stones and chunks of marble, leaving at least 15 injured. The protesters then stormed a nearby Brotherhood office.

State TV reported that protesters burned offices of the Brotherhood's political arm in the Suez Canal cities of Suez, Ismailia and Port Said, east of Cairo.

In the capital Cairo, security forces pumped volleys of tear gas at thousands of pro-democracy protesters clashing with riot police on streets several blocks from Tahrir Square and in front of the nearby parliament building.

Tens of thousands of activists massed in Tahrir itself, denouncing Morsi and chanting "Leave, leave" and "Morsi is Mubarak ... Revolution everywhere." Many of them represented Egypt's upper-class, liberal elite, which have largely stayed out of protests in past months but were prominent in the streets during the anti-Mubarak uprising that began Jan. 25, 2011.

"We are in a state of revolution. He is crazy of he thinks he can go back to one-man rule," one protester, Sara Khalili, said of Morsi.

"If the Brotherhood's slogan is 'Islam is the solution' ours is 'submission is not the solution'," said Khalili, a mass communications professor at the American University in Cairo. "God does not call for submission to another man's will."

Frustration had been growing for months with Morsi, Egypt's first freely elected president, who came to office in June. Critics say the Muslim Brotherhood, from which he hails, has been moving to monopolize power and that he has done little to tackle mounting economic problems and continuing insecurity, much less carry out deeper reforms.

Morsi's supporters, in turn, say he has faced constant push-back from Mubarak loyalists and from the courts, where loyalists have a strong presence. The courts have been considering a string of lawsuits demanding the dissolution of the Islamist-dominated assembly writing the next constitution. The courts already dissolved a previous version of the assembly and the Brotherhood-led lower house of parliament.

Morsi made his move Thursday, at a time when he was bolstered by U.S. and international praise over his mediating of a cease-fire ending a week of battles between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Only a day earlier, Morsi had met with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton just before the truce was announced.

Mustafa Kamel el-Sayyed, a Cairo University political science professor, said Morsi may be confident that the U.S. won't pressure him on his domestic moves. "The U.S. administration is happy to work with an Islamist government (that acts) in accordance with U.S. interests in the region, one of which is definitely the maintaining of the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel" and protecting Israel's security.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Friday that Morsi's declarations "raise concern for many Egyptians and for the international community."

The U.S. calls for Egyptians to "resolve their differences over these important issues peacefully and through democratic dialogue," she said.

On Thursday, Morsi unilaterally issued amendments to the interim constitution that made all his decisions immune to judicial review or court orders. He gave similar protection to the constitutional panel and the upper house of parliament, which is dominated by the Brotherhood and also faced possible disbanding by the courts.

Morsi, who holds legislative as well as executive powers, also declared his power to take any steps necessary to prevent "threats to the revolution," public safety or the workings of state institutions. Rights activists warned that the vague ? and unexplained ? wording could give him even greater power than those Mubarak held under emergency laws throughout his rule.

The decree would be in effect until a new constitution is approved and parliamentary elections are held, not expected until the Spring.

The state media described Morsi's decree as a "corrective revolution," and supporters presented the move as the only way to break through the political deadlock preventing the adoption of a new constitution.

Amnesty International said the new powers "trample the rule of law and herald a new era of repression." It said a new "law protecting the revolution" also announced Thursday could provide for detaining people for up to six months without charge.

Prominent Egyptian democracy activist Mohamed ElBaradei called Morsi a "new pharaoh." The president's one-time ally, the April 6 movement, warned that the polarization could bring a "civil war."

One of Morsi's aides, Coptic Christian thinker Samer Marqous, resigned to protest the "undemocratic" decree.

"This is a crime against Egypt and a declaration of the end of January revolution to serve the interest of the Muslim Brotherhood dictatorship," wrote Ibrahim Eissa, chief editor of daily Al-Tahrir. "The revolution is over and the new dictator has killed her."

In front of the presidential palace, Muslim Brotherhood supporters and other Islamists chanted "the people support the president's decree," pumping their fists in the air.

"God will humiliate those who are attacking our president, Mohammed Morsi," said ultraconservative cleric Mohammed Abdel-Maksoud. "Whoever insults the sultan, God humiliates him," he added.

In rival protests in the southern city of Assiut, ultraconservative Islamists of the Salafi tend and former Jihadists outnumbered liberal and leftists, such as the April 6 youth groups. The two sides exchanged insults and briefly scuffled with firsts and stones.

With his decrees, Morsi was playing to widespread discontent with the judiciary. Many ? even Brotherhood opponents ? are troubled by the presence of so many Mubarak era-judges and prosecutors, who they say have failed to strongly enough prosecute the old regime's top officials and security forces for crimes including the killing of protesters.

In his decrees, Morsi fired the controversial prosecutor general and created "revolutionary" judicial bodies to put Mubarak and some of his top aides on trial a second time for protester killings. Mubarak was sentenced to life in prison for failing to stop police from shooting at protesters, but many were angry he was not found guilty of actually ordering the crackdown during the uprising against his rule.

In his speech Friday. Morsi told supporters that his decisions were meant to stop those "taking shelter under judiciary."

He said the courts had been about to disband the upper house of parliament.

"This is minority but they represent a threat to the revolution's goals," he said. "It is my duty, if I see this, to go forward along the path of the revolution and prevent any blockage."
