ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - When ace Jered Weaver limped off the mound with a back injury after just 12 pitches, the Los Angeles Angels probably figured their winning streak would be the least of their losses Monday night.
After nine innings of relief pitching, 15 hits, three errors, two blown three-run leads, and 3 hours, 38 minutes of exhausting play, Mark Trumbo's soaring homer ended an uncommonly meaningful victory for the revitalized Angels.
Trumbo finished it with a shot to left into the sold-out stands, and the Angels overcame Weaver's first-inning injury exit for their seventh consecutive win, a wild 9-8 victory over the New York Yankees.

Phil Hughes yielded 11 hits and seven runs while pitching into the sixth inning of a rough start near his hometown for the Yankees. Hughes had a 3-0 lead in the first inning after Weaver's exit, but the Angels erased the deficit just six batters into the bottom half of the inning, with Kendrick's two-run single capping the rally.
"That was the turning point," said Trumbo, who had an RBI double in the rally. "That showed some fight."
Weaver had the first significant back trouble of his career in his first home start since throwing a no-hitter at Angel Stadium on May 2.
Weaver gave up leadoff hits to Jeter and Granderson before Jeter scored when Gold Glove shortstop Erick Aybar booted a grounder. Weaver then stumbled awkwardly off the mound after a pitch to Robinson Cano, leaving the game after attempting a warmup pitch.
"It felt like somebody stabbed me in the back," said Weaver, who will have an MRI on Tuesday. "It's disappointing, especially because you get up for games like this."
The Yankees went up 3-0 - but unlike the punchless team that was shut out a franchise-record eight times in its first 36 games, Los Angeles rallied for four quick runs, capped by Trumbo's double into the right field stands and Kendrick's two-run single.

Dickey K's 10 as Mets blank Padres

NEW YORK (AP) - R.A. Dickey, Johan Santana and the New York Mets toyed with the punchless San Diego Padres for a weekend.
They know the real test begins Monday, though, when the rival Philadelphia Phillies come to town.
Dickey struck out 10 to reach double digits for strikeouts in consecutive games for the first time in his career, and the Mets held the Padres scoreless for the second straight day with a 2-0 win Sunday.
"For it to play out like it has in the last few games it's been nice but we're not delusional," Dickey said. "We know there's a lot of baseball to be played."
Dickey (7-1) struck out 11 Pirates on Tuesday. He is the first Mets pitcher to have back-to-back games with at least 10 Ks since Pedro Martinez did it in May 2006.
Johan Santana pitched a four-hitter Saturday. He and Dickey combined in August 2010 for New York's last set of complete-game shutouts. Dickey needed a bit of help to finish this one.
Tim Byrdak got two outs to finish the eighth and Frank Francisco pitched the ninth for his 13th save in 15 chances. The Mets shut out the Nationals last season on May 18 and 19, both joint efforts.
"It's nice to be able to celebrate some good outings in a row and, hopefully, the next guy out feels an obligation to keep it's where it's at right now," Dickey said. "I certainly did after Johan passed the gauntlet."
Daniel Murphy had an RBI single and Mike Baxter scored on a passed ball as the Mets took advantage of a wild Edinson Volquez (2-5).
New York won three of four over San Diego to move six games over .500 for the first time since July 18, 2010. On Monday, the Mets start a run of eight straight series against teams who had winning records entering Sunday.
"When you play these teams you raise your level," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "We got to pick our game up. There's no doubt about it. But if we continue to pitch, we'll be in some games."
The Padres won the opener of the series, scoring a season-high 11 runs. But in the final three they had only one run - going scoreless for 26 straight innings - and 11 hits. With 13 players on the disabled list and outfielder Cameron Maybin sidelined since Saturday with a sore wrist, San Diego has lost six of seven on its 10-game road trip.
The Padres might be getting some help Monday in Chicago. Padres manager Bud Black said before the game that slugger Carlos Quentin could join the team for a series that begins Monday. Afterward, he said there will likely be a roster move Monday. Quentin has been out all season after having knee surgery in mid-March.
The Mets brought back Banner Day for the first time since 1996 as part of their season-long 50th anniversary celebration. Several signs asked for Dickey to throw the Mets' first no-hitter. Yonder Alonso dashed those hopes with two outs in the first, but, boy, Dickey was good.
The quirky right-hander walked to the mound to Darth Vader's theme, "The Imperial March," before the first pitch and then was ruthless with his knuckleball. He struck out the first two Padres - Everth Cabrera was not able to hold onto his bat as he flailed at strike three. Cabrera didn't even bother swinging at the third strike his second time up.
The Padres got a hit in each of the first two innings then went hitless until Jesus Guzman doubled with one out in the seventh - their second extra-base hit after Thursday's win. Guzman then got thrown out trying to steal third base.
"It's tougher if he's on, we were making him earn it, pumping strikes with the knuckleball," Black said.
Dickey gave up three hits, walked one and hit a batter in 7 1-3 innings.
"The knuckleball is a funny thing. It's very enigmatic," Dickey said. "Overall, I felt pretty good with where it's at."
Dickey credits catcher Mike Nickeas with giving him the confidence to try different things with his fluttery pitch that he can throw from 60 to 80 mph.
Nickeas thinks Dickey is striking out more batters because he has better control of the high knuckleballs.
Taking advantage of Volquez's wildness in the first, the Mets added to their major league-leading total of runs scored with two outs. After retiring the first two batters, Volquez walked David Wright. Wright stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch on ball four to Lucas Duda. Murphy then lined a single to right-center for the lead.
Volquez needed 75 pitches to get through the first three innings but New York had little success against him.
"I was a little bit all over in the first inning," Volquez said. "Then I fixed my mechanics and came back and pitched better."
Turner singled with two outs in the fifth, ending Volquez's day after 109 pitches. The 28-year-old right-hander allowed five hits and two runs. He struck out five and walked three.

According to Microsoft, it is going forth with this change in light of the ruling that was given in AT&T Mobility vs Concepcion case in the Supreme Court. In the case, it was ruled that a company can prevent a plaintiff from filing a class-action lawsuit, though leaving the plaintiff options of either settling the complaint privately or through a small claims court.
This amendment will effectively shield Microsoft from any major claims from users in the coming days. According to the company, it has already updated its Xbox Live service with the new user agreement and will soon be applying the same changes to its other products and services.
According to a blog post written by assistant general counsel at Microsoft, Jim Fielden, ?We think this is the right approach for both Microsoft and our U.S. customers.?Our policy gives Microsoft powerful incentives to resolve any dispute to the customer?s satisfaction before it gets to arbitration, and our arbitration provisions will be among the most generous in the country. For instance, we permit arbitration wherever the customer lives, promptly reimburse filing fees, and, if we offer less to resolve a dispute informally than an arbitrator ultimately awards, we will pay the greater of the award or $1,000 for most products and services?plus double the customer?s reasonable attorney?s fees. Most important, this approach means customer complaints will be resolved promptly, and in those cases where the arbitrator agrees with the customer?s position, the customer will receive generous compensation, and receive it quickly.?
While this does sound like it is being done for the good of the customers, the contrary may be the case since class-action lawsuits have often forced companies to improve themselves.

Understanding What a Mortgage Loan is ? The Great Finance
A lot of people tend to use mortgage to mean a mortgage loan. A mortgage refers to the document that you, as a borrower, sign and entrust to a mortgage lender in return for a mortgage loan. If you default on your mortgage payments

Study highlights how Twitter is used to share information after a disaster

A study from North Carolina State University shows how people used Twitter following the 2011 nuclear disaster in Japan, highlighting challenges for using the social media tool to share information. The study also indicates that social media haven't changed what we communicate so much as how quickly we can disseminate it.
"I wanted to see if Twitter was an effective tool for sharing meaningful information about nuclear risk in the wake of the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant," says Dr. Andrew Binder, an assistant professor of communication at NC State and author of a paper describing the work. "I knew people would be sharing information, but I wanted to see whether it was anecdotal or substantive, and whether users were providing analysis and placing information in context.
"In the bigger picture, I wanted to see whether social media is changing the way we communicate, or if we are communicating the same way using different tools."
Binder searched for Twitter posts, or "tweets," originating in the United States that specifically referenced "Fukushima Daiichi" ? which is the name of the nuclear plant ? rather than searching for the term "Fukushima." This allowed him to target tweets about the plant instead of general references to the tsunami and overarching disaster in the region. Using that as a base, Binder then selected every 20th tweet on each day over the two weeks following the onset of the Fukushima disaster ? from March 11 to March 25, 2011 ? to create a representative sample of these tweets.
Fifteen percent of the tweets in the sample contained some mention of risk-related terms, such as hazard or exposure, while 17.7 percent of the tweets included language that helped place the events at Fukushima Daiichi and their potential causes or consequences in context. For example, one tweet read "Most of the 100s of workers at Fukushima Daiichi live close to the plant so it's their families and houses at risk." Overall, 54 percent of the tweets included hyperlinks to external websites, of which 62.7 percent linked to traditional news sources.
"I found that, initially, tweets that mentioned risk were unlikely to include analysis or information on context," Binder says. "Similarly, tweets that attempted to help understand events at Fukushima Daiichi rarely mentioned risk. By the time people began tweeting about risk issues in a meaningful way, the initial high level of interest had begun to wane significantly."
Binder also found that people were more likely to include links to websites as time went on. And, as time passed, a higher percentage of those links were to traditional news sites.
"This highlights a significant problem," Binder says. "People are clearly looking to news outlets for insight and analysis into disasters such as this one. But news organizations have fewer and fewer reporters who specialize in covering science and technology issues ? and those are the very reporters who would be able to provide insight and analysis on these events."
The study also seems to imply that social media have not significantly changed the content of our communications. "This case, at least, indicates that Twitter is allowing people to share news quickly and easily," Binder says. "But the news they are sharing is not much different from that available to someone reading a print newspaper ? they're simply getting it sooner."

Tax-News.com: South Africa Consults On Retirement Savings Incentives

Following the Minister of Finance Pravin Gordhan?s announcement in his 2012 Budget in February that the South African government is looking to provide incentives for savings and the reform of the retirement industry, the National Treasury has now published an overview consultation paper.
The government?s objective is to increase the financial security of all citizens, by way of wide-ranging proposals to reform the country?s social security system, supported by a mandatory statutory fund that provides pension, life insurance and disability benefits. Additional savings in approved retirement funds for those earning above a specified threshold will also be encouraged.
It is said in the paper that the need for such reforms is evident, as most South Africans do not save adequately for retirement and only about half of the country?s workers belong to a retirement fund. While South Africa?s retirement system is successful for employed individuals earning above the income tax threshold, more than half of the formally employed workforce falls below this level, and their degree of retirement coverage depends on the industry in which they work.
To simplify the retirement system, the government now proposes a uniform retirement contribution model, under which all contributions to retirement funds ? including annuities, pension and provident funds ? and all benefits from those funds will be subject to the same tax treatment.
Employer contributions to all types of funds will be included in an employee?s remuneration as a fringe benefit, but individuals will be permitted a deduction up to 22.5% of their income if they are under 45 and 27.5% if they are 45 and above. This will apply to both employer and employee contributions.
To cater for the self-employed and partially self-employed, and to ease administration, the income base upon which this deduction is calculated will be changed to the greater of remuneration and taxable income.
In addition, to improve equity in the tax system and to enable lower-income individuals and those with variable incomes to contribute more, it is also proposed that the maximum permitted deduction will be ZAR250,000 (USD30,500), or ZAR300,000 for those of 45 and above, regardless of income.
A special arrangement is to be made for defined benefit funds that still exist, including the Government Employees Pension Fund, to prevent excess contributions regarding current fund surpluses or deficits, or complications caused by ageing schemes, having negative tax consequences for current members.
It is said that all of these changes are unlikely to affect the tax liabilities of the vast majority of taxpayers; by increasing pension contributions, such liabilities could even be reduced.
However, given that retirement savings are part of household savings, any changes to the regulation of retirement funds must take into account the effect on the savings, and proposals to enhance short- and medium-term savings are also under consideration.
The current regulatory framework allows individuals to use their retirement assets to fill short- and medium-term consumption-smoothing needs. Low rates of preservation indicate that this function is important for many people, but, as the preservation of retirement funds is phased in under the new system and such funds will no longer be available until retirement, the government is also considering the introduction of a tax-preferred savings vehicle to encourage individuals to save for short- and medium-term needs without relying on their retirement funds.
Individuals would be able to save up to ZAR30,000 per year into this vehicle, with a lifetime limit of ZAR500,000. Holdings in the account will be exempt from income and capital gains taxes, and a broad variety of assets will be permitted, including bank deposits, shares, retail bonds and collective investment schemes. Changes to the existing tax-free thresholds on interest income are to be considered as part of this reform, and will be phased in to ensure that existing savers are not prejudiced.
That account would raise the after-tax rate of return on accessible savings, and it is hoped that this will boost the overall savings level, especially for middle-income households.
Over the course of 2012, the National Treasury will release a series of technical discussion papers elaborating on these matters. A separate process is under way to improve financial sector regulation and prudential supervision, and market conduct supervision, to make cost structures more transparent and protect policyholders from unfair practices and charges.

April Retail Sales Come In Line With Expectations ... - Business Insider
April retail sales came in line with expectations rising 0.1 percent month-over-month (MoM).
Less autos and gas retail sales climbed 0.1 percent, missing expectations.
Retail sales were up 6.1 percent from last year.
Expectations: Consensus is for 0.1 percent MoM increase in auto sales.
Analysts polled by Bloomberg expect a 0.2 percent increase in retail sales less autos, and 0.3 percent increase in retail sales ex-autos and gas.
Analysis: Investors look at this number because consumer spending is said to account for 70 percent of GDP, though some argue its much lower.

What does it mean when Facebook says it has 901 million monthly active users on its network? According to figures out from the International Telecommunication Union, it effectively signifies that Facebook is the world's largest social network by a very long shot. The ITU says in a new report that that the number of people using all social media services have passed the 1 billion mark. ATD: Yahoo's CEO Scott Thompson to step down amidst degree scandal
While thousands upon thousands of Americans are celebrating graduation weekend with degree in hand, it looks as if the CEO of one particular internet company will be wondering why he lied about his. After weeks of investigating, word on the street has it that freshly appointed (as in January 4th) CEO Scott Thompson will be "stepping down." In other words, he's being canned. The news comes from an All Things D report on the matter, with the official word expected soon. The scandal took hold a few weeks back, with the official Yahoo bio listing a computer science degree that he allegedly didn't even have. The company line is that he's bolting for "personal reasons," but seriously -- what are the chances these "reasons" would've emerged sans scandal? It's bruited that Yahoo's global media head Ross Levinsohn will be filling Scott's shoes for now, but there's no word yet on who the firm's next CEO will be. It's a shame, but it sure feels like a revolving door in Yahoo's corner office.
