Ketchup 90% off? 'Crazy' Amazon prices

Shop the Grocery & Gourmet Food section of Amazon.com and you?ll see amazing discounts. Some items are being sold at 90 percent or more off the list prices. Sounds a bit much, but that?s the power of Amazon. Or is it?

Check the list prices on some of these items, as consumer advocate Edgar Dworsky did recently, and you?ll find that some of these prices are way out of line.

Dworsky found Amazon selling 24 boxes of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese Cars Shapes for $32.99. That was advertised as a 96 percent savings from the list price of $791.76. Dworsky went to his local grocery store in Massachusetts and found 24 boxes would cost him only $38.

A 20-ounce squeeze bottle of Heinz Ketchup was $2.69, but the list price was shown as $47.49. A box of Barilla thin spaghetti was $1.85. The supposed list price was $55.10.

?It?s just crazy,? Dworsky says. ?These list prices were literally plucked from thin air and then multiplied by a hundred.?

These are not isolated examples. Dworsky says he found hundreds of products that had ?grossly exaggerated regular prices.? (Dworsky lists some of these ?questionable discounts? in the Mouse Print section of his website, ConsumerWorld.org.)

I went on Amazon this weekend and had no trouble finding the same ?crazy? list prices.? I then went price shopping at my local supermarket to get the ballpark idea of the real selling price.

Splenda with Fiber

  • Amazon?s price: $4.39
  • Amazon?s list price: $553??
  • Supermarket price: $5.49

Quaker Oats Old Fashioned Oats (pack of six 18-ounce packages)

  • Amazon?s price: $20.58
  • Amazon?s list price: $211.74
  • Supermarket price: $19.74

?Rice A Roni Beef (6.8-ounce box)

  • Amazon?s price: $1.48?
  • Amazon?s list price: $141.75?
  • Supermarket price: $1.25 (on sale)

?Obviously no consumer would believe such ridiculous list prices," Dworsky says. "But why would you have these comparisons on the website in the first place if they?re not truthful??

Good question -- one I put to Amazon. In a short email, someone in the public relations department wrote:

?We are working to rectify this situation to ensure accurate savings are listed on all product pages.?

I?d like to know more. Why is this happening? Why has this been going on for so long? Dworsky reported on the same problem about a year ago.? I sent a follow-up email and am waiting for a response.??

My two cents
I don?t know what?s going on here, but it?s not right. In many cases, the grocery items listed on the site are not sold directly by Amazon.?So it might be that Amazon is not policing the prices that other companies post on its site. If that?s the case, then Amazon needs to do a better job of monitoring this.

Whatever the reason, consumer protection laws say ?suggested retail? or ?list prices? must be realistic and not some made-up figure. Otherwise, the savings are unsubstantiated and the advertising is considered to be deceptive.

If this is happening on Amazon.com with groceries, it makes me wonder about the ?list prices? on other items being sold on the site.

My advice: Forget about savings claims from supposed ?list prices.? Always compare the price of an item at one store (or website) with the actual selling price of other retailers.?

Michigan race shows Romney, Santorum differences

(AP) ? Republican presidential contenders Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney wooed Michigan voters in appearances that were vastly different both in substance and in style ? and that illustrated the contrasts between the two front-runners for the GOP presidential nomination.

Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator pitching blue-collar populism and his Christian faith, used a visit to a nightclub Sunday on the outskirts of this town to outline a vision of American greatness driven by the workers who he says built the country.

"We know what works in America. Bottom up," Santorum told the 600 people in his audience, which included many people still dressed in their church clothes, as well as others wearing Detroit Red Wings jackets and camouflage hunting caps. He spoke for nearly an hour from a podium before taking questions. The crowd whistled, cheered and shouted back, running through the Declaration of Independence like a call-and-answer sports cheer.

"They are endowed by their ..." Santorum started. "CREATOR!" the crowd shouted back. When a young girl standing near the stage piped up: "You should be president!" Santorum smiled and thanked her. "Out of the mouths of babes," he said to the crowd, easily referencing Matthew 21:16.

A bit later at a soaring ballroom in the Park Place Hotel downtown, a state representative and a congressman stalled for about 45 minutes before Romney stepped onto the stage at the front of the room, an enormous campaign sign hanging behind him. The former Massachusetts governor spoke for about 20 minutes, offering his standard campaign speech with some added focus on his Michigan roots.

"The right course for America is to believe in free people and free enterprises ? and I do and I will," Romney told the crowd of about 700. He cited the "pioneers and innovators" who helped America thrive and said: "Their success did not make us poorer. Their success made us better off!" He barely mentioned religion, stopping only to emphasize the reference to the creator in the Declaration of Independence and citing the motto, "In God We Trust." He took no questions from his crowd, made up of men in jackets and one with a ball cap advertising the Jack Nicklaus-designed golf courses at the nearby Grand Traverse Resort.

How Romney and Santorum court Michigan voters ? and who they're targeting ? ahead of Tuesday's primary illustrates the differences between Romney, for more than a year considered the Republican to beat, and Santorum, his current top challenger for the GOP nomination. Polls show the two men in a close race in this struggling Rust Belt state as both try to win over the thousands of voters who have been out of work for years as their state has struggled to replace manufacturing jobs that powered its economy for decades.

Santorum, a strict Catholic who wears sweater vests and highlights his background as the senator from another suffering manufacturing state, Pennsylvania, is directly appealing to the Michigan's vibrant tea party movement and religious social conservatives. Romney, a multimillionaire former business executive and a Mormon, is stressing his birth and upbringing in this state, playing to the Republican establishment that helped his father become governor decades ago.

In primaries and caucuses that already have been held, exit and entrance polls show Romney has done far better among higher income voters than he has with those who make less than $50,000 a year. And people who don't identify themselves as evangelical Christians backed him in much higher numbers than those who say they are evangelical.

Playing to that divide, Santorum is selling himself as the conservative crusader, a deeply religious man from a blue-collar state who will go to Washington and stand fast against the cultural and economic forces that he says are encroaching on traditional families and manufacturing jobs.

"More people go to church on Sunday than go to all the professional sporting events combined in a year," Santorum says, dubbing his jobs plan "supply side economics for the working man."

"There are a lot of people in this country who want to use their hands and their minds together to make something," Santorum said Saturday in St. Clair Shores, where he appeared with almost no senior advisers in tow. "That's their vocation ? that's what they were made to do, that's what they want to do, that's what they love doing. . And guess what, there's less and less chance to do that."

Santorum's policies echo this philosophy. He's proposing cutting the corporate tax to 17 percent from 35 percent, and slashing corporate taxes for manufacturers to zero, a move he says will help bring back blue collar jobs. He barely mentions the labor unions that helped keep those jobs well-paying.

Romney almost always focuses on his general economic message.

"If you want someone who will dramatically and fundamentally change Washington and bring you less government and more jobs, then I'm you're guy," Romney said Sunday as he has on numerous occasions. He earned more laughter than usual for mentioning his boyhood cross-country road trips in his parents' Rambler, the audience obviously familiar with the old model of car his father retooled when he was running American Motors. Later, he posed for pictures and signed autographs.

There are other differences.

Romney's interactions with voters throughout his events are shorter and much less frequent than Santorum's.

Santorum will hold court just about anywhere that will allow him, including churches, while Romney hosts many of his events at small business and local factories, where he'll often tour the facility with the company's owner, founder or CEO before speaking with a group of the company's workers ? and a bank of local TV cameras.

When a reporter mingled with the crowd and approached Santorum after Sunday's event, the candidate stopped to answer a question about whether he supports raising the minimum wage along with inflation, as Romney has said he does. "I am not in support of that. That's inflationary and doesn't make any sense," Santorum said. "It's bad policy."

Romney hasn't responded to questions from the national traveling press corps in 19 days, and attempts to approach him after campaign events are met with a smile ? and no other response.

Secrets Of Investing In Real Estate | SemOifc

Successful investing is not merely about throwing money at an opportunity. It is a process that you need to commit to. Understanding the nature of the investment you wish to pursue and knowing the right time to invest is crucial. An investment that has been consistently lucrative in the past is real estate. This includes investing in real properties, including houses, condos, office buildings, and agricultural land, to name a few. These structures will always be in demand. For this reason, making an investment in real estate is usually a reasonable decision. There are a few points that should be kept in mind to improve your prospects when making an investment of this nature.
Cedar Rapids Home Builders
The attractive feature about real estate is its ability to increase in value in relation to the rate of inflation. Barring catastrophic real estate crashes, the worth of a property is generally on the upswing. When the value goes up, the investor makes more money because the mortgage stays constant.
In addition, rent can be increased if inflation increases, which, again, results in more income for the investor. Inflation causes the cost of buying or building a home to be prohibitive, therefore increasing the demand for rental properties. The rent also increases when the demand does. Meanwhile, the mortgage does not increase. Therefore, the property owner?s income is increasing while the cost remains the same.
You can start investing in real estate at a low initial cost. The availability of anything from million-dollar warehouses to bargain fixer-uppers offers flexible investment options. Assess first your investing capacity and then choose properties to acquire based on how that money could best be leveraged.
A major advantage in property investment is that bankers are ready to assist with financing via loans. The property itself serves as a collateral towards the loan. Despite this, it is wise to pay down as much of the property as you can comfortably afford in order to avoid paying massive interest which can dampen your long term gains.
You may need to leverage your current assets or otherwise go into debt as you begin your foray into real estate. Borrowing from financial institutions or finding interested investors is one way to raise the funds needed for acquisitions. Borrowing in order to invest, known as financial gearing, is often considered an effective strategy in real estate because loans will be invested in properties that are anticipated to appreciate in value and to yield gains higher than the loan interests to be paid. Even so, analyzedthe potential risks of increasing your debt before you make your final decision.
People often grow excited during a rising market and prepare to jump on board the real estate investment train, only to learn that the train has reached the peak and is preparing to plummet down the other side of the financial cliff. Do not buy properties when the market is high. Wait a while to buy if the real estate has been climbing at an artificial rate. This is usually caused by overactive investors and cannot be supported by the market for long. Wait until the prices return to a more realistic value which the market can sustain. While others suffer and lose their investments during a tumbling bear market, you will have a ready supply of now-affordable real estate options at your disposal, and the funds to purchase them, while incurring the least possible amount of debt risk.
Newcomers to the real estate investment circle will often purchase an out-of-the-way piece of land and hold onto it. The hope lingers that some day that piece of property will be worth something, and they hinge their retirement hopes on it. This is speculation at its worst.
Speculation in real estate is only wise when it concerns a home, building, or land that has valid grounds for appreciation. If the town, for example, decides to build a golf course next to your land, the value will go up. Purchasing in areas that promise consistent growth is a good example of wise speculation.
While real estate speculating has its up side, there can also be a down side. It is safer to settle on property that has a history of good profits, keeping it over the long term while enjoying rental benefits.
There is a lot of promise in real estate investment. Homes will always be in demand. The location, condition, and purpose of those homes, as well as the price at which you enter into the investment, will determine whether you are one of the successful many, or if you fall victim to the next real estate decline.

Military film Act of Valor doesn't live up to its name | Daily Trojan

Let?s get one thing straight.

There?s nothing wrong with watching a simplistic, thrilling action movie.? Sometimes what?s needed is a ton of excitement, delivered at a fast pace and with such fist-pumping energy that you can?t help but smile. Timur Bekmambetov?s Wanted (2008) is a perfect example: the premise is ridiculous, but the witty direction and the humorously gratuitous use of CGI and slow-motion make the film a rollicking good time.

Let down ? Mike McCoy and Scott Waugh?s Act of Valor disappoints with amateurish directing, poor writing and unconvincing acting. - Photo courtesy of EPK.TV

Watching the trailer for Act of Valor, it?s easy to see this sort of potential.

?The characters in this film are portrayed by active duty U.S. Navy SEALs,? the trailer states. ?The story is fictional, but the weapons and tactics are real.?

The trailer goes on to show off some intense, inspired combat scenes, full of dramatic moments and firefights that get the adrenaline pumping. It?s a promising start to what appears to be an indulgently entertaining film.

Good news: The action scenes are, as the trailer promises, a lot of fun to watch ? smartly choreographed with sharp cinematography and pacing.

The bad news? There?s not enough action. In fact, Act of Valor?s action sequences are few and far between. And the rest of the film is so atrocious that it?s painful to describe it.

Act of Valor doesn?t have much of a plot; it begins with the kidnapping of a CIA officer, which predictably develops into a rescue scenario. Past that, there?s not much to describe: The story stumbles aimlessly ahead with the premise that the SEALs discover a terrorist plot that must be stopped at all costs. More than anything, the storyline is there to support the depiction of military missions in random international locales.

To be fair, the combat missions are well portrayed. The soldiers depicted in the movie are perfectly convincing in battle ? they are active-duty military men, after all ? and it?s quite obvious directors Mike McCoy and Scott Waugh have a sense of how to show this action unravel, even if they do dabble in some suspiciously cheesy first-person camerawork.

If McCoy and Waugh had stuck with their strong suit, Act of Valor would?ve been fine, if nothing more than a bloody guilty pleasure. Unfortunately for audiences, the film?s few battle scenes can?t redeem it.

That?s because these scenes are tucked between gargantuan expanses of what must be one of the most poorly written, directed and acted narratives possible.

For all the novelty of watching real-life SEALs on-screen, Act of Valor reminds us why most films do not employ soldiers: They can?t act. For the most part, the performances in the film are akin to what one might find in a seventh-grade production of Grease: incredibly awkward, stilted and humorous for all the wrong reasons.

And McCoy, Waugh and writer Kurt Johnstad are apparently content to break every rudimentary film school rule. There?s no attempt to convey what?s going on in the film in a compelling way.

Mostly, Act of Valor?s narrative is explained through characters standing around, asking questions and receiving lengthy, literal answers about what will happen. Whatever happened to ?show, don?t tell?? This is dialogue that even Meryl Streep and Gary Oldman would struggle to make interesting.

Even more embarrassingly, there is a lot of amateurish directing and cinematography; the camera is noticeably out of focus in certain shots, and not in an intentional shaky-cam sort of way. Coupled with the shoddy plot, these faults make Act of Valor an abject disaster.

What?s most infuriating about the film is that it tries to show off as a noble salute to the men and women serving in the military. Act of Valor wants the drama and emotion of Saving Private Ryan or The Hurt Locker, without any of the narrative effort; a funeral scene at the end of the movie does nothing to create genuine emotion and only feels exploitative in its forced histrionics.

Why even bother to show a funeral when the movie blatantly fails to address the human complexities of the men and women who serve in our military? Act of Valor isn?t an honest look into why we should honor soldiers ? it?s a mere caricature of it.

There?s no reason, then, to see Act of Valor. Though the use of real-life SEALs in the film is intriguing, their involvement does not elevate the action beyond what you?ll find in other, more impressive war films. Want a real look into war? Watch Restrepo.

Act of Valor is simply fiction filmmaking at its worst, somehow simultaneously pointless and boring where it could have been at least entertaining.

With the film dedicated to American soldiers, they deserve far better than this.

Climate change, increasing temperatures alter bird migration patterns

ScienceDaily (Feb. 23, 2012) ? Birds in eastern North America are picking up the pace along their yearly migratory paths. The reason, according to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill researchers, is rising temperatures due to climate change.

Using migration information collected in eBird, a citizen science program database containing 10 years' worth of observations from amateur birdwatchers, assistant professor of biology Allen Hurlbert, Ph.D., and his team in the UNC College of Arts and Sciences analyzed when 18 different species of birds arrived at various points across their migration journeys. Since 2002, eBird has collected more than 48 million bird observations from roughly 35,000 contributors.

The study results were published in the journal PLoS ONE on?Feb. 22.

Pushing migration earlier in the year could negatively affect birds over the long term, Hurlbert said.

"Timing of bird migration is something critical for the overall health of bird species," he said. "They have to time it right so they can balance arriving on breeding grounds after there's no longer a risk of severe winter conditions. If they get it wrong, they may die or may not produce as many young. A change in migration could begin to contribute to population decline, putting many species at risk for extinction."

To minimize these threats, Hurlbert said he hoped the findings would be used to increase awareness around bird conservation. The outcomes also could help scientists identify which parts of the eastern United States will experience the greatest migration shifts, as well as which species face the largest dangers because they will be least likely to adapt successfully to climate change.

Although eBird only contains a decade of amateur-submitted data, versus several decades of data compiled by select bird observatories, the information it contains provides greater geographic coverage. Hurlbert's team focused on bird species that occur over the entire breadth of the eastern U.S. By reviewing the recorded temperatures and the exact dates on which bird watchers first noticed certain species in their areas, the researchers determined how closely bird migration tracks year-to-year variation in temperature.

On average, each species reached various stopping points 0.8 days earlier per degree Celsius of temperature increase. Some species' schedules accelerated by as much as three to six days for each rising degree. To date, the Northeast has experienced more relative warming than the Southeast.

According to the review, Hurlbert said, the speed at which a species migrates is the biggest influence on how strongly it responds to increasing temperatures. Slow migrators, such as the red-eyed vireo or the great crested flycatcher, were the most adaptable to changes. Additionally, the length of the migration path affects how quickly birds move from one location to another.

"It makes sense that if you take your time to move north, you're sort of checking out the surroundings around you," he said. "If the conditions seem too cold, you can decide there's no point in moving on that day. Species that tended to advance quickly, as well as those migrating from greater distances, such as Central or South America, were less able to adapt to temperature changes."

However, being a slow traveler does not free a species from all climate change-induced migration challenges. Because they stay in one spot longer, such birds have heavier habitat and food requirements, making them more dependent upon the resources that are available along their paths. That reliance could become a greater problem if climate projections for the next 50 years to 75 years hold true, Hurlbert said. Climatologists predict the Northeast will continue to warm at a faster pace than the Southeast, potentially forcing slow migrators to move even slower and put greater strain on their migratory routes.

"There's a lot of concern in the scientific community about climate change and how it will affect living things," he said. "This is a really useful data set that can likely address these anxieties around birds."

The study's co-author was Zhongfei Liang, a former undergraduate student who helped Hurlbert analyze the data.

Plant toughness: Key to cracking biofuels?

Tuesday, February 21, 2012

Along with photosynthesis, the plant cell wall is one of the features that most set plants apart from animals. A structural molecule called cellulose is necessary for the manufacture of these walls. Cellulose is synthesized in a semi-crystalline state that is essential for its function in the cell wall function, but the mechanisms controlling its crystallinity are poorly understood. New research from a team including current and former Carnegie scientists David Ehrhardt (Carnegie), Ryan Gutierrez (Carnegie), Chris Somerville (U.C. Berkeley), Seth Debolt (U. Kentucky), Dario Bonetta (U. Ontario) and Jose Estevez (U. de Buenos Aires) reveals key information about this process, as well as a means to reduce cellulose crystallinity, which is a key stumbling block in biofuels development. Their work is published online by Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences for the week of February 20-24.

A plant's cell wall serves several essential functions including mechanical support: Allowing the plant to withstand the onslaughts of wind and weather, and permitting it to grow to great heights-- hundreds of feet for trees like the giant Redwood--and providing an essential barrier against invading pathogens. The cell wall is also the source of materials that have long been utilized by humans, including wood and cotton, in addition to serving as a potential source of biofuel energy.

Cellulose is the primary constituent of the cell wall and as such is the most abundant biopolymer on the planet. It is also the key molecule providing the cell wall its essential mechanical properties.

To address the question of its manufacture in plant cells, the research team, led by Seth DeBolt of the University of Kentucky, focused on different aspects of cellulose-synthesizing complexes.

Working in conjunction with Chris Somerville, Ehrhardt developed a method for observing this complex by tagging it with a fluorescent marker derived from jellyfish and imaging the tagged protein using a technique called spinning disk confocal microscopy. This technique allows individual biosynthetic complexes to be seen and studied in living cells, producing an unusually high level of resolution.

Dario Bonetta of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Debolt, Somerville and Ehrhardt all participated in screening a large number of small molecules to determine which ones interfere with cell wall building. Those that interfered were then examined at the cellular level?using the fluorescent marker?in order to see how they affect the cellulose-synthetic complexes.

Once interesting candidates were identified, a search was undertaken to look for mutant plants that showed reduced responses to these molecules. It was assumed that, because these plants were either unaffected or differently affected by these molecules, then they would have plant cell walls that are compromised or in some way unusual.

Using this process of elimination, two mutations, called CESA1 and CESA3, were found in the genes that encode certain cellulose synthase proteins and these mutated genes were further studied. Both of these mutations are predicted to be found in the part of these proteins that cross the plant cell's membrane, which forms just inside the cell wall.

Other members of the team analyzed the cellulose manufactured by plant cells that had these mutations and found defects in the structure of cellulose that these altered proteins produced.

Normally, the individual sugar chains that make up cellulose bond to each other to make a semi-crystalline fiber. This crystalline structure gives cellulose its essential mechanical properties, such as rigidity and tensile strength. This structure is also is responsible for cellulose's resistance to digestion, which provides a key barrier to utilizing cellulose as a source to produce liquid fuel.

The mutant CESAs, 1 and 3, produced cellulose with lower crystallinity. This cellulose was also more easily digested, a process that is needed to liberate sugars from cellulose so they can be converted to useful fuels.

"The team made a connection between the structure of the proteins that produce cellulose, and the structure of their product," Ehrhardt said. "This is a first step in understanding how this important property of cellulose may be regulated, opening possibilities for development of useful biomaterials and for cellulosic biofuel crops."

Half the battle with anything is making decisions and following through with them. Let?s see what else there is to know about this topic. Self improvement can assume many forms both in personal and business life. It is the realm of your mind and all that makes you tick and behave the way you do. RIP, Raygun: Pentagon's Laser Plane Laid to Rest [Military]

Yes, it sounds completely crazy: A 747 jumbo-jet, embedded with a powerful laser, that can shoot missiles right out of the sky. But for sixteen long years, the U.S. military tried to turn that idea - called the Airborne Laser Test Bed - into a reality. More »

What the L is LG Mobile teasing on Facebook?

LG L

LG Mobile already has confirmed a couple of new phones coming next week to Mobile World Congress. There's the Optimus Vu -- a 5-inch, 4:3 behemouth -- and the just-announced Optimus LTE Tag, which a lower-spec'd version of the Optimus LTE, with near-field communication thrown in for good measure.

Android Central at Mobile World Congress But LG Mobile on its Facebook page also has been teasing some sort of other campaign. It's fairly cryptic -- the only real clues have to do with a bunch of tag lines accented with capital-letter Ls in all the words. "GenuineLy Compassionate." Esteemed VaLue." Perfection with DetaiLs." TimeLess FuLfiLLment." And that's just the latest teaser.

Today's post says that "Tomorrow, we'LL teLL you what aLL the L has been about!" There are fourt other teasers which include YouTube videos of "A River Runs Through It," chinese architecture, the "Bicentennial Man" trailer and an interview with Audrey Hepburn.

We've got no idea if this means yet another piece of new hardware is on the way, or if it's some sort of new marketing scheme or core values from LG. (My gut's telling me it's the latter.) Guess we'll find out tomorrow.

(AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Tuesday that President Barack Obama's administration has "fought against religion" and sought to substitute a "secular" agenda for one grounded in faith.

Obama's campaign seized on the characterization, calling Romney's comments "disgraceful."

Romney rarely ventures into social issues in his campaign speeches, but people participating in a town hall-style meeting one week before the Michigan primary asked how he would protect religious liberty.

"Unfortunately, possibly because of the people the president hangs around with, and their agenda, their secular agenda ? they have fought against religion," Romney said.

The Obama campaign linked Romney's remarks to recent comments by rival Rick Santorum, who has referred to Obama holding a "phony theology" only to say later that he wasn't attacking Obama's faith but the president's environmental views.

"These ugly and misleading attacks have no place in the campaign and they provide a very clear contrast with what President Obama is talking about: how to restore economic security for the middle class and create jobs," said Lis Smith, an Obama campaign spokeswoman.

Religious liberty has been a leading topic in recent weeks because of the Obama administration's mandate that insurance companies provide free birth control even to people employed by church-affiliated organizations, including schools and hospitals. Opponents frame the debate as one of religious liberty while proponents of the mandate say it's about women's health and access to contraception.

Romney hasn't faced voters or reporters very often since Santorum's surge and the rise of social issues in the campaign, largely avoiding questions on the subject. But he's clearly focused on the conservative Republican base that's still skeptical of him, calling himself "severely conservative" during a speech to activists in Washington earlier this month. And his lengthy, detailed answer Tuesday on religious liberty showed clear attention to the issue.

Romney implicitly invoked his own Mormon faith, also rare for the former Massachusetts governor. He said Tuesday that he cares about the issue because he is "someone who has understood very personally the significance of religious tolerance."

He also took questions on gay marriage, Supreme Court appointments and abortion ? and when asked about whom he might select as his vice presidential running mate, he listed "pro-life" as the first credential he would look for.

Romney has found himself in an unexpectedly difficult fight in Michigan, his native state and a place where his advisers had long assumed he could do well. He's facing a tough challenge from Santorum, who has excited the GOP base with strong anti-abortion rhetoric and appeals to blue-collar voters.

"I care about Michigan. This is personal for me," Romney said.

The campaign's fundraising has slowed in recent weeks. The multimillionaire former venture capitalist has yet to tap his own fortune, campaign spokeswoman Gail Gitcho said Tuesday.

Romney has stepped his attacks on Santorum in recent days. On Tuesday he argued that tea party voters should prefer him over the former Pennsylvania senator ? a renewed focus on the fiscally conservative voters who identify with those groups.

"I think the tea party would find it very interesting that Rick Santorum voted to raise the debt ceiling five times without getting compensating reductions in spending," Romney said, echoing the negative campaign ads his campaign and their wealthy allies are airing in the state.

Michigan's GOP primary electorate has grown increasingly conservative in recent years. Tea party voters played a key role in the 2010 midterm elections, and local tea party groups are still active.

When one questioner at Romney's town hall stood and introduced himself as someone from the tea party, the crowd cheered.

Romney's focus on those voters shows in his schedule. He's set to address a coalition of tea party groups Thursday in Milford ? a rarity for the former venture capitalist, who normally holds events at local businesses. Romney has scheduled just one or two public events per day in recent weeks.

Organizers said Romney, who accepted the invitation last week, will take questions from the crowd. Wes Nakagiri, the chairman of the tea party group, RetakeOurGov, that is hosting the event, said many of the group's members want to "root for the hometown boy" but that most would "prefer somebody else."

"The favored son helps if you are a longtime establishment Republican, knew his father," Nakagiri said. "But it's not going to be the same with people that are newly motivated to get into the process. Tea party people that have gotten into the process in the last two years don't have those relationships and are focused on policy."

There are signs that Romney's campaign has stepped up its outreach to the GOP establishment in the state, a group that he's counting on in the Feb. 28 primary.

After Santorum won contests in Missouri, Minnesota and Colorado, tickets for the Oakland County Lincoln Day Dinner ? he was already booked as the keynote speaker ? skyrocketed, according to Jim Thienel, the chairman. Romney's campaign hadn't responded to the party's earlier request to have him address the dinner.

After the Santorum victories, Romney's campaign called to say his wife, Ann, would be glad to attend. She spoke, too. Romney grew up in Bloomfield Hills, which is in Oakland County.

Romney himself has shown confidence that he'll win in Michigan. When asked in interviews earlier this week what would happened if he lost, Romney said, "That won't happen."

Still, supporters are trying to scale back expectations. Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette introduced Romney at his Tuesday town hall as "The Comeback Kid."

"We've got a barn burner of a campaign right now here in Michigan," Schuette said, "and Mitt Romney is fighting like an underdog."

Romney left Michigan for Arizona, where he's set to debate his GOP rivals Wednesday night. Arizona also holds its primary Feb. 28. Then he will return to Michigan on Friday to deliver a major economic speech at Ford Field, the NFL football stadium in downtown Detroit.

Romney said Tuesday he'll use the speech to outline his economic plan. He said he will have details on a plan for tax policy, cutting spending and adjusting entitlement programs.

Book Review: The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook | Basket of Kisses

by Lady K

The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook: Inside the Kitchens, Bars, and Restaurants of Mad Men, by July Gelman and Peter Zheutlin

[Note: This review was originally posted in comments after Lady K won the book in our giveaway contest.--BoK]

So I received my beautiful ?Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook? yesterday. I have to say, I am rather impressed, though I haven?t had a chance to prepare anything, yet.

There are recipes for 20 cocktails, 14 appetizers, 6 salads, 13 main courses, and 10 desserts. Sally?s French toast (with rum) is in the dessert section. Occassionally, there are a several similar recipes grouped under one heading, so there are a few more recipes total than I listed. Sixteen of the items are featured in color photographs in the center of the book with page references. The rest of the book has occassional black and white photos of restaurants, drinks, advertisements, cookbooks, and historical figures.

What surprised me is the of level of detail the book provides about the Mad Men episodes related to the food items, as well as the authors? reasons for providing a particular version of each recipe. Every recipe introduction indicates the season number, episode number, and episode title right below the heading. Each recipe is introduced with notes about the story, characters, location, and timing surrounding the appearance of the food item in Mad Men. The authors always indicate what cookbook, restaurant, bartender, or chef they turned to for inspiration. At times it is an actual restaurant or bar that appears in the show (Barbetta, the Stork Club, the Waldorf-Astoria, Keens). At other times, the recipes are from cookbooks that would have been available to Betty, Carla, or someone else at the time. When a restaurant?s recipe is not available, the authors explain their choice in an alternative recipe. There is often some historic detail about the availability, prevelence, or introduction of a food or drink. For example, the Mai Tai introduction tells some of the lore surrounding the creation of the Mai Tai in Oakland CA by ?Trader Vic? ?who probably got the idea from Don Beach, a beachcomber (Rachel Menken orders a Mai Tai). The Date Nut bread recipe is taken from a recipe shared by Pat Nixon in a newspaper column. In honor of Henry?s Rockefeller connection, the Apricot Apple pie recipe is adapted from a recipe submitted by Mrs. Rockefeller to the Congressional Club Cook Book.

There is a food index and a general index. If you look in the general index under ?Mad Men, episodes,? there is a list of each episode that appears in the cookbook?so if you are interested in food from a particular episode, you can look things up that way.

A large percentage of the ?food moments? we mentioned on this site are included. Don?s hash, Chicken Kiev, Sal?s marinara sauce with meatballs, Trudy?s ?flying chicken,? Faye?s chocolate-chip cookies, Miss Farrell?s Fettuccine Alfredo, and more. Oysters? Yes! Chile rellenos from ?the Jet Set.?? Included. There is a dip recipe in honor of Pete?s chip n? dip. Included are gazpacho and rumaki recipes in honor of Betty?s international dinner.

The steak Betty prepared for Don and Roger in ?Red in the Face? the day she was ?a vegetarian sometimes? is not included, but in that same episode Sally had been practicing decorating a cake with her new frosting machine ?and Sally?s Cocoa Fudge Cake is included. If you like beef, there is ?Trudy?s Rib Eye in the Pan with Butter? as requested by Pete. There is also Beef Wellington in honor of Roger and Joan?s hotel room getaway.

There are not recipes from the Greek restaurant that Don and Peggy visit together in ?The Suitcase,? but there are two appetizer recipes from the specific Greek restaurant where Mark, Peggy?s family, and Peggy?s roommate were waiting for her (same episode).

The recipes aren?t all ?quick and easy,? and the ingredient lists aren?t all short. It varies a great deal, so there are some items that would appeal to novices, and others that are best left to more experienced cooks. Occassionally, there is a simple recipe and a more complicated one for the same thing. The ingredients and spices are not remarkably exotic or strange. For most recipes, you should be able to get everything you need at your grocery/liquor store, unless you live in a very small town or are visiting a cabin. If you are making oysters?surprise!?you need to buy oysters. Slightly more unusual items include: hearts of palm, anchovies, lobster, chicken livers, sherry, eggroll wrappers, watercress, crab meat. Not every recipe calls for items like this. The Beef Wellington is obviously more complicated to prepare than the roast chicken, rib eye in the pan, or the Fettuccini Alfredo. If you are reasonably comfortable in a kitchen and live near a decent-sized grocery store, you should be fine. If you rarely cook, some items might be more challenging.

If you are considering hosting a Mad Men party on March 25, you should check this book out.

Japan emperor has successful heart surgery

Japan's Emperor Akihito underwent on Saturday a successful heart bypass operation and doctors said they hoped he would be able to resume the normal lifestyle he wished for.

Akihito, 78, has been receiving treatment for heart problems for the past year and doctors decided last week that he needed a coronary bypass operation.

Akihito ascended to the throne after the death of his father, Hirohito, in 1989. He has spent much of the past two decades working to heal the wounds of a war waged across Asia in his father's name and helped bring the monarchy closer to ordinary citizens.

"As far as operations go, it probably could not have proceeded any better," Minoru Ono, one of the doctors at the University of Tokyo Hospital who performed the four-hour operation, told reporters.

The doctors said they would keep a close watch on the emperor's conditions until he is deemed fit to leave hospital.

"The operation's success will be measured by whether the emperor can regain the normal lifestyle he had wished for. We are looking forward to that day, but until then, we'll use the word success sparingly," said Juntendo University's Atsushi Amano, another surgeon who operated on the emperor.

Akihito checked into hospital on Friday and is expected to remain there for about two weeks for rehabilitation, they said.

Akihito had surgery for prostate cancer in 2003 and suffered stress-related health issues in late 2008. The following year, the royal agency said he would cut back on official duties such as speeches and meeting foreign dignitaries.

The latest surgery could prompt the royal agency to further limit the emperor's activities.

"Considering the fact that the emperor will not be getting any younger, we will continue to review the amount of duties he performs," said Ichiro Kanazawa, the Imperial Household Agency's medical supervisor.

Save for rare occasions, the Japanese imperial family is spared the intense public attention or media scrutiny that Britain's royals get.

But it serves as a comforting link with tradition at times of distress.

Five days after a devastating earthquake and tsunami struck northeastern Japan on March 11, Akihito made a rare public televised address and in April traveled to the disaster area with Empress Michiko.

Akihito's hospital stay last year gave Japan a rare opportunity to see his heir Crown Prince Naruhito, 51, step in for his father and perform public duties.

While Akihito's reign was defined by his reconciliation efforts, it is less clear what role the scholarly Naruhito may play, though royal commentators expect him to continue his father's efforts to reach out to ordinary citizens.

Plan Your Next Trip With These Great Tips In Mind!

Airplane travels requires that you plan ahead to prevent problems. The trip to the airport requires that you give ample time to deal with traffic, rush hour conditions and other unexpected delays. Pack your bags, including your carry-on, before you go to bed. You need to make all of your travel plans far before you plan to fly. Missing your flight will cost you precious time and money.

The use of travel agencies has declined for a reason; everyone books trips online because it is so convenient. Travel websites require little effort from your part, when it comes to planning your trip. It is simple to find a hotel, schedule a flight or choose a rental car all while using your computer. Reviews of hotels with pictures are instantly available. You can also find excellent deals on good travel sites. For example, you might find a good discount for travel plans made at the last minute.

When taking a pet with you on vacation, be sure that potential hotels allow pets and ask what fees they charge for having one with you. Check and see what all of your options are to ensure your pet gets the best accommodation.

If your travels will take you to a port of call prior to your cruise, try to find a reasonably priced hotel with included parking and check in the night before. Ask hotel staff about any parking deals if there aren?t any published.

You should buy an electrical adapter from a discounted electronics shop before traveling to another country. If you don?t purchase it before you leave, you will most likely have to pay triple the cost while you are traveling.

Traveling to far away places is not the only way to have a wonderful quick get-away or enjoyable day trip. It is entirely possible to have a great time in your home state. Enjoy your local businesses and enjoy the savings. There are often many undiscovered attractions closer than you think.

Take the local currency with you on your next trip. Changing your money in foreign countries can be difficult, especially if it is outside of normal business hours. The larger banks where you live are usually able to sell foreign currency. Make a trip to the bank prior to leaving for the airport.

Take a minimum of valuable items with you when you travel. If you bring a lot of valuables with you, you have a greater chance of losing them or having them stolen.

If your travel includes passing through several countries, make sure you do your research to find out what paperwork is required to get through those countries. You may not be able to travel with the documents you already have, so be prepared to get the visas you need and plan ahead. Use that country?s embassy website, or ask a travel agent about your location.

As this article has spelled out, the are a number of things that a traveler needs to think about. It can seem like a lot of work just to enjoy a relaxing trip. However, once you are equipped with the right travel information and advice, you will be able to plan an amazing trip quite easily. Make sure you apply these tips for your next vacation.

LG 55LW5600 Review

So after lots of research I arrived on purchasing this tv. I understood I needed to obtain a bigger screen and also, since three dimensional is how its heading towards I believed it was my best choice. Used to do lots of reading through around the distinction between passive and active three dimensional and overall the advantages to passive appear to over-shadow the couple of disadvantages. I believe the three dimensional looks really awesome also LG 55LW5600 will have to be personalized for your individual preferences in the beginning nevertheless its really awesome whenever you find your configurations. I required the recommendation of some other review and visited hometheaterdotcom for my calibration configurations and also the picture does look awesome. I like the neighborhood dimming feature, despite the fact that inside a dark room on the dark screen such as the movie credits you can observe the sunshine versions in which the test is I still consider its a properly used funciton.LG 55LW5600 The television includes a great picture and also the features it?s are actually awesome. I particularly love the nero media home which produces a neat little linked network involving the computer as well as your tv (for those who have wi-fi) and enables you to definitely view content on your pc like music or movies and play using your tv. Forget about tieing in the laptop to look at movies. Hulu works just a little slow so thats just a little annoying nevertheless its still nice to not need to run my laptop or xbox 360 just for doing things. Overall I believe this can be a great tv and when you are able to tolerate the slightly better outer edges (hence edge lit) this tv is actually awesome. And That I stress around the slight cuz with local dimming switched on it is not hardly noticeable. The television includes a slew of applications which i havent examined however i just couldnt overcome the truly nice nero feature. For that cost this can be a great tv with no three dimensional?the three dimensional causes it to be almost a steal.
