JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his finance minister, Yair Lapid, were pilloried by Israeli media on Sunday for their failure to fill the job of central bank chief and their lack of a proper vetting process, after two candidates withdrew.
In what has become front-page news, headlines called the long-running search to replace highly regarded Stanley Fischer a "circus" and Netanyahu and Lapid "clumsy fools".
Netanyahu and Lapid have had months to find a replacement for Fischer, who said in January that he would step down in June, two years early, after spending eight years in the job.
On Friday, Bank Hapoalim chief economist Leo Leiderman withdrew his candidacy two days after being nominated, citing a preference to stay in the private sector.
Israeli media reports said two anonymous phone calls to the head of a vetting committee for senior civil servants that was to approve his appointment, hinted that when Leiderman left Deutche Bank over a decade ago it was not on good terms.
Jacob Frenkel - who ran the Bank of Israel in the 1990s - pulled out this week, calling reports of his being detained at Hong Kong airport in 2006 a "witch hunt". No charges were ever filed and Frenkel said it had all been a misunderstanding.
Netanyahu and Lapid were angered by the rough treatment Frenkel received in the media and said that could deter qualified people from entering public life.
"This story is more embarrassing than it is amusing," wrote commentator Nahum Barnea in the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper.
"Ultimately, the joke is on our (central) bank, our economy, our government. A miserable combination has been created here between a prime minister who is certain that he knows everything, and a clueless finance minister."
Lapid, a former television presenter who once said he knows nothing about economics, himself joked, "It turns out that economics professors a very colorful and wild bunch."
He told radio stations that choosing a new governor would be done in a considered manner and explained the failure by saying that the state does not employ a private investigator.
Analysts and many lawmakers see Karnit Flug, Fischer's deputy and acting Bank of Israel governor, as the best choice but she said in a letter to bank staff on Sunday: "I intend to serve as acting governor until the appointment of a new and permanent governor and the completion of an overlap period".
Flug, Fischer's choice, has been passed over twice for the top job and resigned after Leiderman's nomination on Wednesday.

Elizabeth Price, winner of the 2012 Turner Prize
An Oxford University art project involving the winner of last year's Turner Prize has been shortlisted for one of the UK's highest-value contemporary art awards.
In partnership with the Pitt Rivers Museum and the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, the Ashmolean Museum is seeking funding to commission a new piece of work by artist Elizabeth Price to form part of its permanent collection.
The proposal is one of four to have been shortlisted for this year's ?60,000 Contemporary Art Society Annual Award for Museums.
Professor Christopher Brown CBE, director of the Ashmolean Museum, said: 'It is a huge honour for the Ashmolean to be shortlisted for this year's Contemporary Art Society Annual Award for Museums.
'The Ashmolean is a rare place where people can study the history of the world through an encyclopaedic collection from Predynastic Egypt right up to art being made today.
'This prestigious award would give the country's oldest public museum the chance to work with one of the UK's most acclaimed contemporary artists, Elizabeth Price, and to collaborate with Oxford's world-famous Pitt Rivers Museum and the equally celebrated Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art. Elizabeth has proposed a work which would open up the archives and collections of Oxford in a radical new way.
'From autumn 2013, the Ashmolean will be expanding its modern and contemporary art programmes with a series of ambitious exhibitions and projects. The opportunity to work with the current holder of the Turner Prize as part of this programme is a truly exciting prospect.'
Elizabeth, who was born in Bradford and received a BFA from the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art in 1988, has recently returned to Oxford to take up a permanent University lectureship. The winner of the 2012 Turner Prize, Elizabeth wishes to make a new film that explores the photographic archives and collections of the University's museums, focusing particularly on the Ashmolean and Pitt Rivers.
The winner of this year's Contemporary Art Society Annual Award for Museums will be announced in November following deliberation by a judging panel comprising artist Brian Griffiths, arts journalist Charlotte Higgins, gallery director Elizabeth Neilson and curator Kirsty Ogg.

Brooklyn Bowl Wedding Band All Stars ft. Slammer & The Pogs
There's this new thing in town called the Brooklyn Bowl Wedding Band All Stars that's about to rock Williamsburg. The new monthly party will be two hours of New York's finest musicians performing cover songs, the perfect marriage of beloved classics and our favorite local heroes. The first unofficial All Stars party on April 1st was such a sold-out success of shameless '90s covers that we couldn't help but expand it into a regular event. Imagine it - a wedding at Brooklyn Bowl with all of your friends, minus the annoying in laws and with the added bonus of some Blue Ribbon Fried Chicken. The core house band will be composed of talented artists who have played and toured with the likes of French Horn Rebellion, Penguin Prison, Savoir Adore, Passion Pit, Lissie Trullie, and more. On top of that, there will be a rotating cast of special guest vocalists (or wedding singers, you choose) at each party. So come one, come all, and don't forget to bring your party gear and dancing shoes because as the wise Juicy Jay would say, WEDDING BANDZ A MAKE HER DANCE
**8/3 special guests include members of Savoir Adore, Wakey! Wakey!, Snowmine, Ron Pope, Akudama, Jenny Owen Youngs, SSION, Emmy Wildwood, Ido Vs. The World, and MANY MORE.**
